all Michael Blunck graphics are copyrighted ... I think every single pixel ... to use any part of his creation you have to ask him for permission
(you can contact him for example in TTDPatch Maillist)

It's very easy to find out.
Use the GRF encoder to decode the sprites, then post them all here individually. Then MB will complain about which ones violate his copyright, and he'll have to do it individually because they are posted as separate files. Of course we will remove the offending files, and what's left, will be ones that aren't a problem. Then we'll know.
As an aside, wasn't the first release of the DB set, under GPL? Some of the early ones were. That would allow them to be used in other sets as long as they were credited!!!!! Taking someone's work without giving them credit is ALWAYS wrong, GPL or no.

Oh. I should have known that was too elegant a solution.

OK, just to make sure that EVERYBODY knows:
I spoke to Petr Vanek and this is how it is: The CSDset that he created was based on the DB set, but I do consider it logical, as this was his first project and he had to start it somehow. However, the set that got out, and that was not intended, was a version, that was still under development.
The way it looks now is not downloadable yet, but it DOES NOT contain any Michael Blunck's work. The page that hosts the downloadable csd set does not belong to me nor Petr Vanek, and he has allready asked for the set beeing removed from the site, with no response.

OK, this has to be the last straw.
Next time there are "allegations of copyright infringement", the admins should take the correct action of seeking a specific complaint and making it public, and not just silently and swiftly removing things. That policy gets us nowhere pretty quickly. Something along the lines of "Foo claims that sprites 1200-1207 are actually the class 133/7 from the XYZ set". For all people know, it may be from a version from which usage is allowed, or it may be that they look similar, because there are only so many ways of drawing things at such limited resolutions. Think monkeys and typewriters.
I also think Michael seems to be acting rather vindictively towards people on this forum that are making a real effort at producing new and different things. He refuses to take part in the forums, yet as soon as there's something which *might* be violating copyright (use of the word "theft" is incorrect, since he still has it, doesn't he?) he's straight into action. Following this case, and the previous incident involving something based on a GPL version of one of his creations (that's "based on" and not "ripped from"), I have lost all respect for Michael. That, and the fact that his contributions to the community, which were once useful to people as reference material, are now useless to anyone who wants to do anything other than play with them in-game, since his "licence" now insists that even the act of running grfcodec -d on them constitutes a breach of the licence and "copyright theft" (I like the way people misuse "stolen" in this context. How can it be stolen, when the original owner still has it in front of them?).
This forum is supposed to be a COMMUNITY. I think it sucks that someone who is very much outside the community can even think they have the right to tell this community what they can and cannot do.
