I believe the silo is from "Industrial Stations v0.98" in the US set - http://www.as-st.com/ttd/newusa/download.html. Works and looks great, also in OTTD

Started on a new game, this time set in the arctic. Just about same options as the last one, except canadian stations has been thrown into the grf mix.

(1) Bodstow Woods power station lies on top of a small mountain range and is serviced by three coal mines. It's early years so the layout is still rudimentary, but all debts has been paid by now.
The 5x freight multiplier really hit the train coming up from the valley to the north, slowing it to an crawl on the last climb. With a second Mikado added it now almost flies... Still, on this occasion it must give way to a Consolidation.

(2) Three years on and the most profitable line has been doubled in preparation for a second train. Bodstow Woods has been upgraded to a RoRo station to be able to handle the increased traffic.

(3) The first decade has passed more smoothly than my tropical game.

(4) The bridge at Bodstow Woods is replaced with a tunnel, due to safety considerations

and the line to Grednor Mines is now double tracked.

(5) Grednor Mines is a major coal supplier. Unfortunately it's a hard climb to the power station.

The classic coal operation... Coal's being moved a short distance from the Santa Cruz mine to the Montrose mine. At first I moved it by road - as it turned out even a really short distance and an army of Ford T's just wasn't enough. Now a couple of Shay's handles the workload. From the Montrose mine it's all being transported to the local power plant. The layout surrounding the Santa Cruz mine depot was heavily inspired by a recent screenshot from Dave Worley - I like it

Woodmere has grown to be the largest city. While providing its residents with ample parking facilities, sadly no one noticed that they required the residents to drive through the little plaza or take a long detour through the industrial zone.

Elmhurst serves as the terminal for two local passenger lines. In addition a main line also passes through. That, and the growing requirements of the local food processing plant leaves the place a little cramped for space.

Two EMD E8's passes each other, with a nice view to the lakes. Unknown to the blissful passengers oil drilling and mining takes place on a large scale on the nearby hillsides.

The hillside mining operation. The PA-1's hauls the iron ore across the hills to Woodmeres steel mill. Barely adequate for the job they reach no more than 2/3rd of their top speed on the run. In the background coal is being hauled to the same mill.

In the true spirit of Christmas 'tis the season to resurrect this ol' thread

This is a game started in 1920 with DBSetXL. I haven't played with the DBSet before but it sure brings back some fond memories of my Märklin model railroad.

After 13 years this is the result. I play with modified building costs and modified bridges so the first decade or so is always tough going but I'm close to being back in black. Backed by a subsidy the initial line went from Witzenhausen to Moers. The line was later extended to the main line Ortrand - Witzenhausen - Moers, and a second main line Ortrand - Witzenhausen - Gößnitz was also created. These lines has provides the company with a steady profit.

Witzenhausen is the regional center and growing quite well. However the station is wedged in between a factory and a hotel, making expansion near impossible. With 2 main lines and a total of 6 trains passing through, an extra platform is sorely needed. So far the transport company has seen no need to rectify the situation, since they like to get their money's worth of the initial investment, and bringing the company out of debt has taken top priority.

Two BR92's passing each other on the Witzenhausen - Moers section. The BR92's has done quite well and brings in a nice profit each year.

Moers is a somewhat secluded "mountain" town. Not much is going on, but the views of the surrounding valleys are quite stunning. So far no tourists has spotted this little gem, but that may change...

At the other end of the line is Ortrand. The inhabitants are mainly employed by the local industry or commute to Witzenhausen, creating an almost endless line of commuters to the great joy of the transport company.

Wow, you treat your passengers very harshly with still using BR92s mostly.

Switching to the also very cheap BR75s would be a project with a quite short payback time, I'd guess.

The screenshots are nice btw.

Well, I do have a single BR75 in service but the revenue is on the same level as the BR92's. Of course the engine driver complains loudly about constantly having to wait for the track ahead to clear because of the sluggish BR92's. On this occasion the tracks were clear though:

On the other hand two BR32's servicing Gößnitz tops the profit list year after year. Having the track from Witzenhausen to Gößnitz all to themselves seems to do the trick.

The year is 1937 and the town of Gößnitz is connected by a bus service to nearby Velbert bringing in additional commuters for the train service. The line is also extended towards Oberhausen.

Oberhausen is nestled between two lakes and is home to a cathedral.

Fast forward to 1942 and the troublesome station of Witzenhausen has finally been reconstructed. The factory closed down due to lack of service and the space was promptly used to expand the station. Unfortunately two BR92's collided during the reconstruction due to some signaling mishap. After the initial chock the opportunity was seized upon and a brand new, sparkling red BR05 was pressed into service.

A fresh start in a US setting...

With only one glass works on the entire map, this nearby sand pit is its sole supplier of sand.

A mountain range separates the sand pit from the glass works. Getting to the glass works required some tunneling and taking the line close to the sea.

Norfolk sits in a somewhat isolated spot. Getting there required either some extensive terraforming and tunneling or a long detour passing east of a mountain...

Instead this route passing the local "glacier" was chosen, since it was cheap and offered the passengers a great view.
