I've only ever been through 1 or 2 small dust storms. They aren't supposed to get this close to the coast, but we are in the middle of the worst drought in recorded history, so the dust problem is getting worse. The ones you saw on TV would have been the worst ones I have ever seen on TV too.

Most people close their house if that kind of thing comes.

Who wouldn't close their house, in fact Australia is a bizar continent, you have this enormous deserts in the middle and all trees/forests at the sides

I remember seeing an other interesting phenomenon in the upper parts, where you have the rainforests
It looks like the dust storms, but in fact it's made of clouds and water, it's like a huge wave rolling from inlands to the sea, very impressive, that reminded be when i saw that dust front, that was like a wave too
