Okay, I will keep it multilingual. German and english... i hope, there´s no one who only understand chineese :D

It seems, that there is a lot of work to do...

By the way: i use a 20" TFT with a 1600x1200 dpi at home. How can I check how the webpage looks like on a 15" Monitor? Can I tell firefox or IE to use a fix resolution? For Example 1024x768?
I don´t want to rezize my screen every time.

Well, I'm afraid that's what you have to do. You are very much in the minority with that 1600x1200 screen. Most people run at 800x600 or 1024x768 nowadays. 1280x1024 is also relatively common. To my knowledge, there aren't many monitors capable of running at 1600x1200[0], much less people who want resolutions that large.

If you do create different versions for different resolutions, remember that you also have to create different versions for:
*different browsers
*different browser configurations (number and arrangement of toolbars)
*different browser window sizes (not everyone browses with their browser window maximized)

It looks you've solved most of the problems simply by making the tables variable-width.

[0] Mine isn't, or I'd have it set to that.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

are you F-in serious?

i know a total of ZERO people in person that have 600x800 screens.

the minimum screenshize of anyone i know is 1024x768 and those people own laptops. the largest screensize of people i personall know is 1920x1440 and another guy who has that reolution (almost) on his laptop

my screen is 1600x1200 and has been for the last 2 years. and 90 percent of everyone else i know has a 1600x1200 screen.

CRT's are more commonly 1600x1200, TFT screens standard resolution is 1280xsomthing.

no designer should need to consider designing for under 1024x768 unless the particular requirment or target is maximum accessability. (doesn't mean they shouldn't consider it at these resolutions, but it should not serve as a restriction)

just as you don't often design websites for 14.4 modems. technology changes and so does the size requirements.

I just halve the width of my browser window to test websites for smaller resolutions

I'd have to say the same thing. Most screens are landscape, not portrait.</pedant>
If I may ask, what are the ages of the people you're polling here? I can come up with at least three computers set to 800x600. My two living grandparents (OK, yes, they're around 80), and the owners of this borken computer that I'm fixing (Family of 4, two teenagers) all have their resolution set to 800x600.

Oh great! If 1600x1200 CRTs are so common, then you can buy me one. But not more than a 17" diagonal, unless you plan to buy me a new desk too. If you do, make sure it has space for one desktop and two towers, plus (of course) a convient place for me to put this KVM.

I know a whole slew of 800x600 people.

My friends at college use it, the college computers use it, and so does my Auntie.

well being a designer i guess i am a bit biased LOL

but my parents and my brother who have nothing to do with design, and even have old computers have screens which are no smaller than 1024x768.
the college computers use it
you need a new college.

ours are all 1280xsomthing TFT's or 1600x1200 flatscreen CRT minimum, (depends what room you are in)

I'd have to say the same thing. Most screens are landscape, not portrait.
ha ha LOL, yeha i noticed i got it wrong, but i couldn't be bothered editing my post.
My two living grandparents
probably pointless to buy a new computer. do they use the computers much?
But not more than a 17"
you can get 1600x1200 17" screens but things will be way to small. 1600x1200 basicly represents a standard 19" or larger screen.

a 1600x1200 TFT 20" display is the next thing on my purchase list.

For Firefox, get the WebDeveloper extension, which has an option to resize the window to any size you like - it's available from the normal update site (addons.mozilla.org or somesuch).

As for screen sizes, lots of people running older hardware use 800x600, most laptops and 15" TFTs are 1024x768 (and fixed at that - they look dreadful in anything else), and if you're lucky enough to have a 17" TFT or 19" CRT, you might be running at a higher resolution.

Never make sites that are specific to one screen resolution - HTML and CSS let you flow text as needed, so make use of it. There is a reason sizes can be expressed as percentages...

Oh, and yes, I do web development for a living. 8)

Check out this topic
EDIT: If you meant the graphics, if you mean other files, then you should hope for an answer from someone else :P
