I had also a speed problem with Linux

All problems where solved doing this:

Start a new terminal
if required change to your openttd directory and type in:

export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=dga
./openttd

No I'm rnuning a game(a little limitation: only in full screen mode possible) with as many vehicles as possible on my 4 years old Athlon 700 without any perfomance problems.

lxuser@localhost bin $ ./openttd
Error: Unable to load driver sdl(SDL Video Driver). The error was: No available video device

Worse yet :P
Please tell me if what drivers are you using for your video card.
Anyway, i tried several sdl games and every one has performance issues. Games i tried:
-gate 88
-frozen-bubble
-blobwars
-openttd
-rocksndiamonds

All put X to the 95-100% so i guess there is something wrong on my system or with xorg.

This odd, changed the color depth from24 to 16 and now it works well; but the rest of sdl games still sucks. They're a bit smoother but still stealing a huge amount of cpu.

Anyway this is solved. Thanks everyone.
