There are diesel trains that run at high speed (ICE TD runs at 200km/h, capable of 222km/h in tests, the Class 220 Voyager and Class 221 Super Voyager run at 125mph or 200km/h but have been clocked faster, HST/Class 43 runs as 125mph) without catenary, so it should be allowed.
The only place I can think of in the UK that has both catenary and third rail is Farringdon, in order for Thameslink trains to switch between the two (I'm sure there were previous trains that did too, but those are the only trains I can remember doing it)
I'm not sure if I would use the 80km/h or 120km/h more - in my recent games I've been using the 120s except for short single line/short distance stuff to industries, so if I were to get rid of one, it would be the 80 track.
Duct tape is like the Force - it has a Dark side, a Light side, and it holds the universe together.
I like the 80 km/h tracks very much - as well as the rest of the NuTracks
I use the 80 km/h for my terminus stations, siddings, industial tracks and low priority tracks at some stations.
I found it vey realistic to use the 80 km/h tracks for these situations.
It's sad that there is only 16 slots for diffrent tracktypes. Will it be impossible to increase this number? It would be nice if it was possible to combine more newtracks .grf like it is with different trainsets.
It is quite obvious this set cant statisfy everyone, unfortuneatly...
And i do like to have atleast one "speed" with both catenary and 3rd rails. Mainly for use in stations that might serve both/all three flavors of trains. I can however introduce a parameter to decide if this should be on the 80 or 120kmh tracks. (or whatever speed really, but thoose come to mind first).
And as people say, there are diesels that run faster then 160kmh, not neccesarily as fast as 230, but they do surpass atleast 200...
that then comes to:
1. 80kmh normal
2. 80kmh cat
3. 80kmh 3rd
4. ((80 kmh cat + 3rd) OR
(120 kmh cat+3rd)) via parameter
5. 120 kmh normal
6. 120kmh 3rd
7. 160kmh normal
8. 160kmh cat
9. 160kmh 3rd
10 230kmh normal
11 230kmh cat
12 High speed
13 NG normal
14 NG cat
15 maglev tracks
16 planning tracks
A 2nd alternative is to have a parameter to remove the NG tracks, and have cat+3rd for 120 and 160 as well...
You could just have it that normal rail is automatically upgraded to 3rd rail when that type of train comes out, which eliminates an entire class of track
Can you not have the graphics update with time like with the road graphics on other sets?
Most modern UK third rail trains are capable of 90-100mph (that's 144-160km/h) - the Class 442 Wessex Electric (5WES) holds the speed record for third rail at 108mph (174km/h), but is only rated for 100mph.
Duct tape is like the Force - it has a Dark side, a Light side, and it holds the universe together.
How about making the the 3rd track without catenary behave as if it did, using the graphics without. Then you free up one slot per speed limit. Remove 120 and replace by NG?
80 , 160, 230, NG * 3 = 12 (With/without catenary and 3rd track)
High speed = 1 (Steam/Diesel do not go that fast ?)
Monorail = 1
Maglev = 1
Planning = 1
Just an Idea. I usually upgrade from 80 to 160 skipping 120.
Before shooting, does NG with catenary exist? If not the idea above would have 1 spare slot for Yarss .
NG doesn't need 3rd rail, though. (or DOES it?) But if it doesn't need, I would have also 80 replaced with 120 and save that last slot.

It uses both. OHLE on HS1 and 3rd rail on the normal network in Kent. It's not that third rail is dangerous for high speed trains, more that it can't supply enough power and also the pick up isn't as good at speed.
