I would like to recommend you to take a look at the Transport Empire part of these forums. We are currently making good progress towards a playable engine.

I don't think openttd will ever be capable of handling such an renderer, it will almost certain be a complete rewrite of most if not all features...

I see the playstation version of TTD did have a 3d option, it would be interesting to understand how that was done...

I would be VERY interested to see what you are talking about.
Do you have any URL to propose?
If you are not ready to work a bit for your ideas, it means they don't count much for you.

That's the bit. It suggests that the developers figured out how to do it, and do it on a pretty low rent system (PSX could manage around 180,000 textured polys per second according to wikipedia) and the whole thing fitted into 2mb of system ram and 1mb of video memory.

Problem is there seems to be a lot of custom art in there, although the "square" buildings seem to just be built out of the isometric models.

Just need to find someone who can decompile PSX games now. :D

The "custom art" is simple, take the existing sprite and shift every 2n or 2n+1 th pixel up n pixels.

Though having said that, and understanding the architecture of OpenTTD more now, a 3D version of the game would be a lot of effort, even with the increase in power of 3D systems...

Nevermind Crysis... these are the prettiest graphics I've ever seen. This HAS to happen one day.

it would be nice if it happened, yes, but i am guessing the new dev (the name is somebody) just will not get around to it in the next few years :-P

But there's nothing to stop anyone who wants it form doing it themselves.

I can't see them writing a new graphics engine in a short enough time frame to merge it back into trunk though.
