(Released) Montana Rail Link Landscape ( NP and MILW)

Post by bluebeetle »

Montana Rail Link is a Regional operation based in Missoula, Montana. Currently the railroad operates nearly 1,000 miles of track (also at nearly 1,000 employees MRL is one of the larger Class IIs in the country), which runs between central Montana near Billings to eastern Washington at Spokane. MRL got its start in 1987 when it took over ex-Burlington Northern trackage (originally Northern Pacific) through Montana and today is one of two railroads operated by The Washington Companies.

The railroad is a top-notch, efficiently run operation that has several connections with Class I carriers BNSF Railway and Union Pacific. Not only does the railroad’s property compete with many Class I railroads in terms of speed but it is also one of the few smaller lines to purchase brand new locomotives, in this case EMD’s new SD70ACe.

While the Montana Rail Link's system is made up of ex-Burlington Northern trackage its roots actually go all of the way back to BN predecessor Northern Pacific. To give a brief history of the NP it was the first of the three major Northwestern railroads to begin construction. Unlike many other railroads the Northern Pacific did not change names numerous times throughout its existence and would likewise never acquire numerous other smaller roads to form its system. Perhaps what the railroad is best remembered for is its Ying Yang herald and its distinguished flagship passenger train, the North Coast Limited, which used a beautiful two-tone green livery.

Being that Hill held such an influence over the three railroads, including the jointly owned Seattle, Portland & Spokane, the Northern Pacific likely was destined to be merged with the other two roads at some point. The railroads tried for decades to merge but were blocked numerous times by the ICC, mostly citing monopoly issues as the reason. It took until 1970 when the ICC finally granted permission to do so (partly because the Milwaukee Road consented after years of trying to block the merger) forming the then Burlington Northern. The BN, however, would last only 25 years before merging with the Santa Fe to become the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, today known as simply BNSF Railway.

Currently Montana Rail Link has an exceptionally large roster although all of its locomotives are strictly of EMD heritage.

-----------------------------------

many areas especially around Missoula, NP and MILW tracks ran next to one another, and parts of the 4th sub used to be milw tracks. so you can do A LOT with this map: NP, BN, MilW, MLR, and BNSF.

Planning on Doing Billings to Paradise, including the Boseman Pass and Mullen pass. mullen pass has 2.2 climb over the continental divide. So mountian railroading :D

Image

this is very very rough still, A LOT of work to do, i am also playing with eroision in the mountains to make them look more realistic, and the river has A LOT of bends and curving rocky shore to make it look more real as well. I have at least two more weeks of work on this map. it will be a mod free map.

Okay first off this is MOD Free made on a nice clean install of loco. Second i couldn't make it exactly like the MRL line there was too much and too large of an span of an area to cover. So i made this one map with no towns, so you the player can do anything you want with the landscape, second one has MRL towns. Now for the people that like to tunnel through mountains and not follow the route given and just take short cuts through mountains just avoid this map, it will be too easy to play if you do that.

anyhow there is lot of rivers, and mullen pass has a short 2.2 grade and i made it that way too, Boseman pass is not too difficult nice steady pass. I have no released a mod version yet, because it has been like 6 months since i installed any packs so tomorrow i will be exploring all the new goodies.

Files located on first post!

The lake o the map is Lake Pend Oreille, and it is fricking huge. MRL runs right along it.

anywhoo these are pics of the landscape, with no towns yet placed.

well..

what can I say?

Very very sexy map...

I was not 100% sure the route i was supposed to take... most was pretty obvious. Maybe we should release the boundary markers early?

One quick comment. before anyone plays the "map". I would recommend turning off the AI and the allow auto building of industries... there were 20 industries in stupid places after 2 years.

Since i had a shortage of MRL equipment, I played the map in the late 60's as MILW.

edit, added another shot

If You ever make it as a "Ready to play" Modded map, It might be one of my faves..

that milw equipment looks very nice, the colors compliment the back ground very nicely.

The boundary markers are your call there plastik.

one thing i tried to do was leave a nice flat area of land on each end of the map, so people can make yards, etc. i know i will lol.

May the force be with you.
For little boys, three things reign as supreme attention-keepers: tanks, heavy construction equipment, and trains, we all know why where here.

A quick heads up.. I ran into a tricky tunnel....

This tunnel has an S-bend in the middle of it..

It does not bother me.
It took a few tries to figure out why it didn't line up.

One thing I "discover". Do you realise that if you build a roadcross near the entrance/exit of a railroad tunnel the trains will horn before reach it. Like in the old good times!! :D
