Photo Of The Month - May 2012 Voting

Post by Geo Ghost »

Hey all!
It's that time again. Where I'm sitting up, falling asleep at the keyboard once more to bring you guys lots of amazing pictures.

The film this month was Stations, Ports, Stops and Terminals as set by Dave and Ameecher.

Entries can be found here as always. :D
Lots of entries again this month. It's a pleasure to set them up - even if long winded.

Voting closes midnight on the 7th (Thursday night). Or approximately that. 7 days from now. I know that much! I can't set the exact time voting ends so close enough guess...

Anyway, on with the voting. Best of luck to everyone!

Also, I mentioned this in last months entry topic. I'm going to be away in Norway between the 20th and the 8th. Thus setting up voting at the end of the month may be delayed. I will try my best to get it done but I can't hold any promises on that. I will let you guys know more when the June entries open.

All the best!
-Richard

A massive toss-up for me. Two shots are by far and away the best.

I mostly agree, though I'd say there are 2 very good ones and one outstanding :-)

You got my vote, TheIrish for the good composition and especially play with colour and contrast :-)

Tough choice. A very tough choice indeed! ALL are great photos. Too bad I have only one vote...

Well done people, really great stuff from all!

Can't somebody else do the voting stuff instead of you?

Probably, yes.
What I'll do next month is upload entries straight to the wiki as they are posted so the end of the month just requires a new topic and linking back.
The only reason I don't ask people to upload direct tot he wiki as I like to have them in a certain format for reference and to keep things organised.

<month><year>POTM_<user>
So for the file names this month look like: 0512POTM_Dave_W
Just makes organising and identifying them a lot easier :P We'll see how it goes. I'll have internet access so I should be able to sort it. But if I'm in doubt, I will ask around for a bit of help.

Tough choice indeed. A lot of good pictures. Especially GeoGhost's picture has a lot to it in regards to atmosphere but would have needed a bit more preparation/precision during execution. A sturdy tripod with longer exposure time could have worked miracles here I assume although it would have not been much help with the annoying chromatic abberations. Love the composition though!

I liked GurraJG's shot also for the nice leading lines caught in the shot. Should try same spot again either in bright sunlight making the ceiling more interesting or during blue hour. Both ways would look better than the simple gray. Waiting for the train to be leaving/arriving the platform so that the leading line would "point" to it would help for sure also.

Doktorhonig was graced with a gorgeous landscape and brought in a nice foreground to lead the eye into the shot but unfortunately the colors are rather dull and the trees by the station show that overall it is a bit too dark. Tilting the camera a bit down to reduc ethe amount of bright sky and extending exposure slightly might have been an option.

Klaasgras could have taken the shot a bit later when it is a bit darker and then extended exposure time also. That would have intensified the "business" of the city. Provided the area is still busy later in teh evening.

In the end TheIrish has blown me away by telling a whole story with one shot. Still debating with myself whether it looks better with the horizon aligned properly or tilted as it is but anyway it is an amazing shot!

Thanks so much to all of you for sharing your pictures with us!

Again, I'm blown away by the pure awesomeness of the submitted pictures. On the other hand, the decision for The Irish's submission was rather easy for me. Instead of taking a picture of an entire station, he picked out a small part of it, and even shows it as a silhouette, but still everyone knows what it is and that it fits the topic perfectly.
I also like Geo Ghost's picture very much - I think it would be really outstanding if it was an HDR-image.

You're totally right. The picture was part of this panorama and since it is already overexposed on the right, I couldn't make it any brighter. Pointing further down would distort it during stitching. But yes, those are lame excuses - if I had known that I'd need a picture of a station, I would have taken a photo from another viewpoint.

Well sir that is a really gorgeous panorama! Wish I hand the opportunity and talent to shoot such. Did you shoot the individual shots as RAW files? In that case a little batch Lightroom processing might have helped to bring out the details even further. But anyways it is absolutely beautiful!

Thank you for your words. In understand your points, but let me explain to you how I took this picture. I visited Budapest with my classmates. We arrived in the late afternoon, unpacked our bags and took a shower. First thing after that, we went for a walk. At the end of the street where our hotel was located, we had to wait for the traffic lights. At that moment I tried to make a picture of the square. I had no tripod with me, so I just kept clicking until the traffic light turned green.

When I got back home I realized that this was just a Lucky Shot!

Some fantasic photos this month and a headache to pick one, but looking at the vote so far it seems we might already have a winner. One a side note thank you to who ever it was who voted for me :) I've just got myself a new phone with a much better camra so hopefully next Month I might have a little bit more of a chance.

With 5 or so days left, that could change :) Great photos everyone!

By the way, are we allowed to vote twice this month? I already voted but it wants me to select one again.

EDIT: Nevermind, I guess it just lets you change your vote. I don't remember that last month though.

Oh s***.

Anders, I'm so so sorry! I didn't see your entry. I don't know how I missed it. I went through each page twice.
Ok, then, I need to do this differently to how I'm working it now. In future, I'm going to upload entries to the wiki as they are posted - not at the end of the month. The way I'm doing this at the moment is obviously not good enough.

My sincere apologies everyone. I will get that fixed right away.

Edit:
Entry uploaded to wiki and added to poll. Re-voting is available and I will put a message up on the facebook group for people as well.
My apologies again. I had saved it but I must have missed it when uploading. I will make sure this doesn't happen again.
