If you know what you're doing, it's surprisingly easy to make something huge.
For example, that video that Notch posted on his blog a while ago, with the gigantic flaming dispenser array? Must have taken a full day to make it, yeah?
I made a replica of it (slightly bigger one at that) in two hours.
It dispensed so much cake my computer crashed.

I think that guy said he used MCEdit... Because filling thousands dispensers with arrows is a bit of time waste.

The other guy, who made Portal song, used MCEdit as well. He copied first part of song.

Then that guy is a coward. I filled them in by hand, stopping every three dispensers to exit, use invedit to reload my inventory with arrows, and continue.
It only took me a QI episode or two.

I always carry a bucket of lava with me to destroy large groups of enemies while caving.

bad idea, so much usefull mob drop will be gone in lava

I usually don't bother collecting mob drops while caving. My caving expeditions teend to be limited only by inventory space. And 64 iron ore, coal or even cobblestone are more valuable than 4 sulfur or 3 strings.

Well, string is more valuable than anything.
You can craft it into bow, and that's the most powerful weapon in game. Better than lava, better than TNT, better than diamond sword.

Getting the few strings necessary to craft a bow is no problem.

Also, I'm considering building a mob grinder in my base, but I don't want it to be too big. Anybody knows any good design that would fit in 2 floors = 7 blocks (11 block is total. maximum)?

Yeah - make it out of cobblestone and keep it dark.

That's all. Just make a 2 blocks deep pit under the floor so they fall down into their deaths on cacti.

OK, try something like this: 2 blocks deep pit with lava on side. Put sign on lower block. Mobs will fall through lava, and if they somehow survive it, their head will be stuck in lava anyway. When they die, and their loot won't "jump" up into lava, you can collect it.

It should look a bit like this:

But a bit more compact. If they die before they reach bottom of the pit, you'll have to make it a bit bigger (to build "runway" for lava so mobs won't die while falling through thick layer).

simple water trap with arrow dispenser should be enough
just make water running so mob once get into the water will go with the flow ... at the end make it small space so the water can go forward but mob will be stuck, put a pressure plate there that activates nearby dispenser with arrows (once it dies it will stop shooting) ...
now the small hole that water is going to will take forward any loot, you only need to get there and pick it up

You can also make a waterfall trap for skeletons. What you do is create a 3 block water fall and have walls on every side of it. On one side you remove the lower most block so water can escape but mobs can not. You then allow the water to flow out a bit and you get yourself an arrow collection point
