Any simple guides for HP/Tonnage ratios?

Post by Deewalla »

This question had been banging on the back of my head for a bit, but it only really came to post worthy urgency when I saw a recent post with a GTEL heading SIX grain hoppers. Now, while I might not play with a 1250hp per car ratio, I am running Serpent atm (GREAT GREAT scenerio. Thanks!) and have 36car coal trains headed by roughly 8000hp. Slow starts, can hear the engines chuff and slip upon starting. On shorter trains, 15cars of paper, I have 2800hp.

In short. Is there an easy guide to how much horsepower (if you wanted to make train consist's realistic) you should plan for per ton?
Having a 9-44CW per local 6 car service is easy enough, but my layout would (personally) just look bland.

I hate to say it. But the HP to tonnage ratio in this game is terrible and completely unrealistic.

You can have a train of just GTEL's (8500 HP) slow to a crawl to get up a big hill.

The weight of the locomotives kills itself on the hill.

The trick is to try and avoid your train on 2 slopes at once. Also, it seems that Helper on the back do help a bit.

A better HP to Weight ratio will allow for a faster recovery of speed though.

To most people it is just cosmetics... you only need 2 locomotives if you are running with breakdowns on.

what I have done several times is use a modified 10,000 hp flipper right before the last car to get it up the hills faster,

Okay. I've actually just been searching for that download for two days now, so that was fairly well-timed. Where's the link? I'm gonna make my boxcars carry grain...
