Yup. thats MSTS, in that photo, .. a $2-$10 bargin bin game. on a $45 map with add on engines/rollingstock at another $40 or so... but there are plenty of free maps and engines...

that orange one up front should look familliar, that was painted just for the US lomo set. I dont think there is any EJ&E stuff for msts.

the other engines wont make it to lomo.. AKA payware... altho.. looking at that consist i think all but the GP40x have been made for lomo as of last update (non-payware models). The, gp40x would be pretty easy, just take my sd45, toss some GP40 trucks on it and change some stats to those similar to my SD40M-2...

I also agree that the sleds are there to kill off jobs. But. it is part of US railroad history and this set does try to give you some of the flavor of that history.

OK, so umm.. I a was tinkering around...

i have a question. would people that were playing steam era scenarios mind terribly if the wood bridge was a darker creosote color like a wooden railroad trestle bridge?

Like the upper color of the one pictured. (Sorry i cant find a better photo.)

I ask this because... if you look to the right you will See a general idea of the color. it is a rough scripted color change so it far from perfect, ill have to remake it if i use it...
and the reason it is dark is is if you wander right in the picture.... oh look a coaling tower...... the tower looked weird on the wood colored bridge.. it is probably to dark right now, but it is a wip i tossed together real fast for a proof of concept. i guess i can always make the tower a lot lighter...

it is supposed to me somthing like this..
Image

or we can make a concrete one?

Image
Image

if people dont like the idea, i can go to a side mounted one like this (or both)

Image

then you can put the "freight station" from AMI next to the tower, then park a few coal hoppers in it for a static display.

IDK. just a thought.. maybe i just wanted it myself and no one else would :P

ok, next a watertower... and maybe diesel fueling stations and sand pipes...

The tower looks brilliant. I wouldn't mind the different bridge, never use the wooden bridge anyway. The signals look very cool as well ;)

maybe we can do a color like the water tower, we shal see..

does that water tower look good about scale wise? it need some touch ups still. this is just a scale test.

i am sure it is not to small maybe to big?

I'll pull that base tile out from under it once it is squared on the map. same for the one in the middle of the coal tower.

*edit* after staring at it for a while i decided the "footprint" was a bout right but it was to tall. i photoshopped a fake one next to it to see how that would look. maybe still tall? to fat now?

Since there is a water tower, a coal tower is almost a must have for the steam scenarios. It looks really good. the signals are also hot.

May I make some suggestions?

1) 4-8-4 J-class Norfolk & Western
2) 4-6-2 Pacific USRA
3) 4-6-4 J3a streamlined Hudson New York Central

The J-class because obviously it is so well known but it was also suited for climbing mainline mountains. The Pacific because it was the locomotive of the US for all the railroads from World War I up into the late 1930s. The J3a streamlined Hudson because it was so closely associated with the era of the streamliner. Basically, all three are major American icons of the steam age.

I'm a modeler but I'm modeling another game right now (a 3D shooter game) but if you want, I'll eventually get on board and help you.

[EDIT]

I've gone through all 29 pages so here's a few notes I want to add. The first is that I found that you actually did make a J3a model. But I wanted to criticize it because it looks like the B&O Royal Blue Pacific, except in grey. It would look good if you decide to make it blue and call it a Royal Blue. However, it does not look anything like the J3a streamlined model.

The second thing I want to bring up is the discussion about the Colorardo DMU car. I strongly recommend adding this to your creations. Being from a family that does business in the public transportation sect, I can say I know what I am talking about. The Colorado DMU car has become an enormous innovation in the public transportation industry. Basically, it is more energy efficient and it can seat more people more economically. Its expected to replace most of the commuter trains around the country (it was specifically designed for that). Tri-rail, the commuter rail agency in the West Palm Beach-Miami region has purchased that DMU depicted there and is now running it in regular service. I live in Orlando, FL and recently (after great political turmoil) a commuter railway was approved for the city, and the fleet will be entirely composed of Colorado Railcar DMUs. Colorado Railcar already has orders coming in from all over the country. Its going to become a huge phenomena within the next few years so I would reccomend that you add that (its already been done for TTD). And FYI, there's also a two-level version.

Just so everyone is on the same page

We are ahead of You on these.. the The J3a with the streamlining is Mostley finished in 3D max. it is being mapped out so we can render it for both the 20th century ltd and the empire state express.

the delay is mostly that steam engines are just massively time consuming. and a huge time sinkhole. in the time it takes to make one steamer. i can have 20 other models done.. so.. you see how that goes.. i do have some MHQ sprites done for steamers. I just need to write a new script to assemble them.

there area lot of steamers in the set that can be with little modifications, a few drops a of paint and a possibly a new tender something passable as another steamer. especially with the Pacific's and mikado's .. right now in beta we have a lot of steam back end going around, Zimlock is cracking whips at me on messenger daily trying to get lots done in that field.

also, we might have a "usable: Big boy now. the real issues is still that it clips at certain angels. this will be an issue with all articulated steamers. ..

The col. rail car... Yeah... one day.. it is low on the list TBH. i need to get blueprints or a scale drawings for it first if i wanted to make it. we have much more important EMU/DMU type trains ahead of it. things like Doodlebugs, the M1 thru M7 series, MP75's, Metroliner EMU's, the 2000 DMU variant, South shore cars, galloping goose, etc.. you see where i am going? most of the EMU/ DMU passenger equipment is MIA, it has to get in line..... Hopefully Lionel can pick up some of the slack now that he is making models in max (HINT).

feel free to hop in and render anything you want. i can give you a hand getting it into lomo..
