A thought came to me while reading an argument about tram ID numbers in another thread in this forum, and it ties in with something that's been bugging me for a while.
For the longest time I've been annoyed by TT's proliferation of trucks. IRL you don't order a Ford grain truck, a Ford mail van, or a Ford wood truck for your business. Assuming we're not talking about artics, you order a Ford box van, a Ford panel van maybe, or a Ford chassis cab; and you send that vehicle to a truck body specialist to do the rest. The truck body company might not do much, they might simply line the interior of your panel van with plywood & add a compact refrigeration unit on top, or they might fit a great big iron ore hopper complete with hydraulic tipping mechanism to your '8-legger' chassis cab, according to your requirements.
Anyway, my idea was simply for a grf with refittable trucks, adding realism and simultaneously freeing up roadveh IDs for trams & other projects. I'd suggest using the low end of the vehicle ID numbers for the trucks, without overwriting the buses of course.
I'd start on one myself except I've already started on a big grf project. Besides, I'm lazy & probably wouldn't bother making any new graphics for this.

That sounds a lot like George's approach in his LV4 set. In fact, it is a lot like that.eekee wrote:Anyway, my idea was simply for a grf with refittable trucks, adding realism and simultaneously freeing up roadveh IDs for trams & other projects.
