Yarraville. This is my favourite place to waste time (at least, until it says that Bus X is losing money, or that Plane Y has exploded, or that Coal Mine Z has closed down...), just watching trains. Steel, container, log, oil, fuel, grain, ore, coal and passenger traffic all passes through this one section, possibly the busiest section of line on the whole map... and without a single jam up!
ABT13.png
Sunbury and Balow. Originally Balow was to get a train station, but the town objected to my mass removal of trees to build the line to the north, and I never bothered to build the station after that. Incidentally, that power station was there in 1921, and is still there in 2001. Yet, plenty of industries I have built a line to, and just before I can commence supplying them, they close down on me. The one damned industry on the whole map that is in my way, and it won't budge. So Sunbury never realised it's full potential as a terminus for local trains, allowing fast Intercity trains to pick up only and then skip Yarraville...

...oh well, probably for the better, that whole area is WAY too complicated as it is.
ABT14.png
Finally, the refinery at Darling. Only has one train and 15 trucks supplying it, and yet the fuel traffic it provides usually makes good money. I never thought it would go beyond one fuel train out, and initially one oil train in. The oil train in is still running though, and more and more fuel needs to be transported!

As you describe, the pax numbers are just mental. On the old Cargodest pack, there was a setting to reduce that, which I found quite hand at later stages. Also, the fact that only 1 route is used to reach the destination, I don't like too much. But I guess that would make computing really heavy.
Yes, it takes more skill to run Cargodist and keep numbers below 1000 at a station. If you look at my screenshot thread you can see the effort I had to go to connecting just 2 towns of 5000 people!

Not sure what you are on about with the 1 route comment - this is a problem of cargodEst. CargodIst was designed from the ground up to get around this so it does actually use multiple routes! It seems to use some dark magic and a lot of estimation (as doing things roughly uses a lot LESS computer power), but it is based on the capacity of the route - once you have more people to shift then the capacity of the route, it starts spreading the excess to more "expensive" routes.

It still makes it difficult to do quaint rural routes though... it's about matching your supply to the town's demand. Realistically, the demand would approximately match the supply - people wouldn't keep piling onto train if they knew the service was crap.

You always manage to keep your lines looking realistic Raichase. Mine always end up as direct routes with quad-lines running everywhere...

Thanks all for the kind (and creepy) words. Currently I'm focusing on having three/four types of stopping patterns:

1. Suburban - short haul routes at high frequency moving a lot of passengers.
2. Local - Longer routes to smaller towns out in the middle of nowhere
3. Interurban - Routes between cities stopping at all stations.
4. Cross Country Express - Routes linking the major cities, stopping only at the major regional centres.

You'll give yourself some headaches with that signal setup at the passing loops if you're having more than 2 trains in operation.

3 trains actually. After that, it will be a problem indeed. But at least some nice "Nebenbahnromantik".
