Well, not exactly true.
Apparently, grfcodec has problems with .pcx files with an uneven picture width which have been converted from .bmp files with that odd width. (That may explain your positive experiments with the Gimp.)
This is a known bug which has been in existence since the first version of grfcodec.
Just assure your .bmp files have always even picture widths.
