What about makeing some sort of "logger" ? Basicly a small "ship", could perhaps take aprox 5 tons of logs, and when full it is a floating log, and when empty it's a small boat with like 3 ppl and a outboard engine? That way we could simulate "loggers" that move logs from a forrest upstream to a sawmill downstream. Perhaps with a few different random "liveries". I.e. different logs in the water :)
Fabulous idea!
I thought about it just yesterday and I did want to suggests it! Glad I read those older post before!

I think the captain will have some issues with docking with that poor visibility! ;)

These logs have at least several metres in diameter :)

But drawing realistic sized longs relative to the size of the ships is impossible, these are good.

why not have the underwaterline in 2nd CC ?:)
logs are too large
Unrealistic? Dont we chop down rainforest about a footballstadium a minute or something? :)

Looks good! But the logs do seem to be piled a bit too high compared to the supersturcture of the ship.

You could try using a log from the OpenGFX industries, i think they are smaller. I'll post a .png when I get home (tomorow) if people are interested...

How could he?

Sprites for steel, copper and plywood (a bit modified) are from my sets?

Ok, I've edited the previous post and removed the sprites.

It's awkward raising this, but you know those sprites are also used in ISR and you're not credited? As Zimmlock is the credited author there, I assumed (hmm, assumptions, troublesome) that Zimmlock would be in a position to give the permissions.

cheers,

Andy

I've been thinking about how to get a large number of ships into 11 slots. As much as I'm playing open now, I'm not neglecting the TTDP players. Instead of actual ships, base the designs around the hulls instead. That way you've got a standard hull that can be refitted to most types of ship. Hulls would have 3 separate classes depending on what they're refittable to

I'm proposing 3 classes for ships:

-Cargo
-Passenger (includes mail)
-Mixed

Each class would have various subtypes. The basic subtypes would be as follows...

-Narrowboat (Canal Boat) - Mixed - Refittable to everything
-Small Sailing Ship - Mixed - Refittable to everything
-Large Sailing Ship - Mixed - Refittable to everything
-Small Cargo Vessel (steam)- Cargo - Refittable to all except mail, passengers and tourists
-Medium Cargo Vessel (steam) - Cargo - Refittable to all except mail, passengers and tourists
-Large Cargo Vessel (Steam) - Cargo - refittable to all except mail, passengers and tourists
-Small Passenger Vessel (Steam) - Passengers (mail and tourists)
-Large passenger vessel (Steam) - Passengers (mail and tourists)
-Small cargo vessel (Diesel) - Cargo - Refittable to all except mail, passengers and tourists
-medium cargo vessel (Diesel) - Cargo - Refittable to all except mail, passengers and tourists
-Large cargo vessel (Diesel) - Refittable to all except mail, passengers and tourists
-Small passenger vessel (Diesel) - Passengers (mail and tourists)
-Large passenger vessel (Diesel) - Passengers (mail and tourists)
-High speed passenger vessel (Diesel/turbine/Jet) - Passengers (mail and tourists)
=============================
These subtypes would pretty much cover any type of ship out there, high speed for example would be hovercrafts, hydrofoils, etc

This is 14 types, and some may be removed for TTDP players (the sailing ships and possibly the narrow boats), but this will allow the most flexibility in my opinion.

The other ideas (log rafts, etc) can be added into a "tug" or "Special" type.

Thoughts?

Well, one could make a modern ship and an old ship using the same VehID, with a year-dependant livery. Possibilities with only 11 VehIDs are unlimited, but solutions are often not user-friendly.

I haven´t taken a look into ISR, so I´m not aware of the sprites being in there. The only person I gave permission to use all cargo sprites was George for his LV .grfs.

DanMacK wrote: I've been thinking about how to get a large number of ships into 11 slots. [...]
In NewShipsXL I´m using these classes:

class ID / name / cargo

0 tanker [liquid]
- sailing tanker
- oil tanker
- LNG tanker
- chemical products tanker
1 fishing vessel / trawler [FISH]
2 ferry [PASS, MAIL]
- car ferry
3 passenger ship [PASS, TOUR]
- sailing ship
- wheeler
4 inland vessel [all cargo]
- passenger
- tanker
- freighter etc ..
5 reefer [refrigerated]
6 special ship [CMNT, LVST, VEHI]
- powder carrier / cement carrier
- livestock carrier
- car carrier
7 general cargo ship / freighter [all cargo]
- "clipper" (sailing)
- piece goods
8 bulk carrier [bulk]
9 container vessel [GOOD]
10 coastal trading vessel (coaster) [all cargo]
- chemical tanker

There´s a two-fold development inside each class:

- by refitting
- by game time, using CB36 (some properties still missing but probably Lakie will work on it soon again).

regards
Michael

Ok, well there's definitely a problem here (unless you agree to the reuse of those sprites). Someone ought to sort this out and I guess I'm going to have to try.

Step one - can we discuss this somewhere else - publicly in another thread, or privately on email or PM? We ought to involve mart3p as the current coder / release manager of ISR, and Zimmlock as the sprites are attributed to him.

cheers,

Andy

I can't imagine a sailing ship refitted for oil. Oil really wasn't a factor until post-Civil War, and steamships were well established by then.

(searches Wikipedia)

Sonofagun! I stand corrected! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falls_of_Clyde

Makes sense- the sparks from a coal burning steam plant and crude oil don't mix well.

What do people reckon: ships cropped to fit or resized to fit the ship purchase GUI?
