Apart from being technically impossible at the moment, I don't think you want Steam and Diesel trains on an supposedly underground city network. You really don't want to be standing at a platform in a tunnel tube while a Steam train is producing lots of smoke. There's a reason metros all are electrified
Gameplay wise I think this would be an undesirable thing too. If you'd be able to run normal trains on metro tracks, that make the metro tracks less special and would take away its unique abilities. Metro tracks currently are designed in a way they're an effective transport method in heavy crowded towns, with fast loading and capacity, a high acceleration but low top speed, designed for short-distance commuter traffic. Firstly, you don't want slow accelerating Steam trains on your effecient metro network. Secondly, when everyone would build metro tracks for long distance travel that'd make no sense either.
Summarized, I think metros are fine as they are.
