I was asked to create a scenario in order to use it for a contest.
The scenario is in a temperate setting, with lots of mountains and small lakes. I also used the new 'rivers' feature, which is now available in the latest nightly versions.
The aim of the contest is:
"Open up this scenario and do whatever[1] you like in order to have the largest company value on january 1, 2051".
[1] Things not allowed are:
- funding of primary industries (you may fund processing industries, which do not generate cargo by itself).
- changing difficulty settings (breakdowns are disabled anyways).
- cheating (does that need explaining?).
Requirements:
Game version (get latest version from http://www.openttd.org/nightly.php):
- OpenTTD r11932+
NewGRF files (place in /openttd/data/ dir):
- River Graphics Set (24-oct-2007)
riversw.grf
http://www.ewetel.net/~michael.blunck/ttd/download.html
- DB Set XL (v0.82)
dbsetxlw.grf
http://www.ewetel.net/~michael.blunck/ttd/download.html
- Aviators Aircraft Set v1.331
pb_av8w.grf
http://www.pikkarail.com/ttdp/av8/download.htm
When you're done playing, please upload a savegame and a screenshot showing company value. Please also indicate what version of OTTD you were using.
I'll start playing the scenario myself, and post the results as soon as I'm done!

Re: [OTTD] Badwater Springs Scenario
Well, I've downloaded this and I'm giving it a shot. At first glance I love what you've done with the rivers.
UPDATE: I've attached a screenshot of the most evil-looking section of the network. It's 1965, and just about everything is connected except the oil wells. Yearly revenue is about $12 million (inflation turned on). Though you can't see it, there's a coal mine off to the right. The central main line runs lower left-upper right through the picture; everything else is feeder lines and branches, plus the "belt line" around the two industries. Those two stations alone handle 19 trains; another 11 pass nearby.
The hills make the map a bit challenging if you don't want to level everything. I'm using 24-car trains, and on some grades anything less than the BR 194 just dies (including the V200). The 110, 140 and 150 would work fine, but it's a three- to four-fold increase in cost when the maximum speed on the main network is 50 mph anyway.
UPDATE: I'm up to 1993, and the system is fully built (passenger traffic included), so I'm posting a save. Additional NewGRFs are Stolen trees, Suburban stations, New stations, and brick freight stations I think. Nothing that materially alters gameplay.

Yes, me too. At least until some stupid ironworks established itself in the middle of it.Mackensen wrote:At first glance I love what you've done with the rivers.

And it should be fairly easy to beat me in my own challenge, because I started creating realistic routes, respecting the landscape and such.

Re: [OTTD] Badwater Springs Scenario
I took a break, then came back and got the game up to 2043. Yearly profit is about $400m, derived from 167 trains, 400 road vehicles, 51 aircraft and 3 ships. I don't think I've mauled the landscape too badly.
