TT-Forums TTD Artist Competition (July winner - OzTransLtd!)

Post by Dave »

Welcome one and all to the greatest graphics showcase thread in the history of the Transport Tycoon Forums!

ALL QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS SHOULD GO TO THE THREAD IN FORUM SUGGESTIONS AND FEEDBACK. THANKS!

The aim of the competiton
The purpose of this competition is to encourage the development and continued excellence of the graphical artists we have here on TT-Forums. The "competition" and the accolades afforded to winners will hopefully encourage both old hands to improve and new artists to give graphics a go.

Ultimately the aim is to create a competitive but friendly competition built around both fundamental pixel-art and sophisticated, flowing design.

How the competition works.
From the first day of the calender month, the competiton will be open to all to submit their graphics. When they have submitted their graphics, a post from the organiser will be placed in the thread with their name.

To submit your graphics, you MUST send your submission to the organiser (Dave Worley) by PM or e-mail - dave [at] daveworley [dot] co [dot] uk.

Entries posted in the thread will be ignored and removed by a moderator.

There is a NEW limit of 15 entries per month. A post will be placed in the thread once this limit has been reached.

On the 15th day of the calender month, a poll will be created with an option for each entry.

This poll will remain open until the LAST DAY of the calender month.

The winner, obviously, will be the artist whose entry attracted the most votes.

When entering, remember to add a little about the submission - what is its purpose? How would it be implemented? Did you have any inspiration?

Sorry, but we can't accept anything other than original 8bpp graphics for this competition, although it IS acceptable to enter graphics made for features exclusively available in OpenTTD.

Comments
Although this is a competitive competition, remember that the aim is not to create any animosity amongst participants. All such posts will be removed without question, and persistent offenders shall be reported to the moderators, where a warning will be considered.

Have fun drawing!

June

Due to the delay in the competition throughout the month, there will be NO May award.

To this end, entrants may make their entries from now until the 15th June.

Participants are reminded of the rules of the competition - you must send your entry to me directly - this allows me to showcase the entire field in one post later on.

Good luck!

3 posts in a line Dave! I just post because I don't want to see a fourth one.

If someone else did this his thread would be banned.

June voting stage

The entries are in and the list has been compiled. In the post below are the images that have entered the competition. They are ordered from first to last in order of submission time (e.g. Michael submitted his rivers with three hours to go before the deadline).

For information about each entry, go to the following address:

http://users.tt-forums.net/daveworley/a ... p/june.php

Remember that constructive critique and appreciative comments ARE NOW welcomed, but full scale critique discussion should take place in the author's own respective graphics thread.

Voting ends at midnight on the cusp of the 30th of June and 1st of July.

Wow!

Awesome array of entries. I better step up my game, and my size, if I want to compete with the likes of some of these!

Agreed. A fantastic mix of traditional with modern, and use of cutting edge features.

And don't worry about your entry, it remains a lovely piece of art!

It is a great piece of art, simo. But there's no need to limit yourself to one tile. Make it big! I do feel bad that it is stuck between two of the larger entries.

Great work, it is was tough for me to choose. (I'm not vain enough to vote for myself this month).

Thanks guys :)

This was only my first try. So I just wanted to pay more attention to detail.

I don't know if bigger is necessarily better, but it can't hurt to open up my options on a larger scale.

Construction sprites of Oz are amazing. Final building is OK too but with so few pixels all intended details cannot fit :( . Make this for OpenTTD 32bpp please.
Station daylight is a masterpiece!
And certainly I 'd like to see how michael's river slopes animate. A gif should be posted as well.

I will not vote for any this turn. They are so nice I cannot choose.

this is definitely hard...

- Darkwalker's forest is nice, yet could be a wee bit more textured. i do love the forest-feel it has.
- George's church is nice, cosy, but a bit small.
- AndersI's trains are awesome, i love the original train, although i had to zoom it out to see it better. as usual, it's somehow extremely detailed whilst a perfect size.
- Snail's big boy is very impressive, unfortunately it's a bit big for TTD, but that's not to do with the graphics itself.
- Ameecher's tram is really good, but i'm not a tram man.
- Oz's hotel is brilliant, amazing work with the TTD palette... but i'm not fond of that kind of architecture. sorry Oz, your graphics are brilliant though. ;)
- Lifeblood's carplant is very nice, detailed and trademark Lifeblood graphics.
- Simo's building is very impressive, highly detailed with brilliant lighting effects whilst it's far too small. i predict already a grand future for this artist, when he starts to work on larger buildings. imagine all that kind of detailing on a bigger building. ;)
- Daylight's station looks stunning, at first my favourite, whilst it lacks some details it truly needs. work on it, and it'll be brilliant. :)
- Mr. Blunck's graphics are awesome, as usual, but he's facing a tough competition here. he certainly gets kuddos for the fact that he sent in highly functional yet not too flashy graphics.

in the end, it became AndersI.

Seems to me to be rendered because it´s composed from 2160 unique colours, thus violating rule 5:
Official Competition Rules wrote:5. Entrants are reminded that their entries can be of any particular graphical object, provided that it is 8bpp.
(8bpp allows only for 255 colours.)

Note: some of the other entries are also not 8bpp but still contain less than 255 unique colours, so that would have occured only by saving them (falsely) as 24bpp or 32bpp.

That's odd. I loaded the offical TTD palette before saving, and I still had to spend another 30 minutes getting the shading correct.

Oh, I just checked and I accidentally entered the draft, which as you stated is in 24bpp.

Sorry

It doesn't matter now, but as of next month, I'll be checking all entries for the number of unique colours. Obviously this would be a maximum of 255.

As you were, gentlemen, as you were.

I'm torn between George and Michael. To be perfectly honest, I like the quaint simplicity about both of them. The gentle river with the small EMU dawdling over the bridge is a nice scene, but the church is such a nice little church, the kind you'd find in any town...

I'm going to place my vote for George.
