And yet another good idea! I am in favor of having ships carry huge loads of goods (the ocean oil tankers can take up as much as a couple of trains!) However river/canal ship should not be able to carry huge amounts, but something in the direction of one large train at most.
Perhaps we can do A LOT of ships with the refitting option, making the usage of slots less. A little suggestion for the early days when shipping was by far the cheapest way to carry goods:

- Sailship: All, but in very low quantity (cheap)
- Steamship: all goods except liquids
- Large cruise ship(steam): Passenger, mail (like Titanic)
- Canalboat (steam): All goods, lower quantity
- Riverboat (steam): Passengers, mail, lower quantity

I might try and draw a little riverboat or sailing ship

> Will the ocean liners in NewShips XL have more capacity than they have now?

A good question. In principal: yes. However, since game balancing is already largely reduced those new capacity values have to be checked out carefully.

> I think a container ship should be able to carry more goods than a train is able to. Now a train with 11 container vans can carry 880 tons of good, the container ship just 450.

One problem would be the rating which will be reduced if (large) ships would have to wait a long time for a full load. As a solution, we should have ships carrying the same kind of freight but with different capacities, but this isn´t possible due to a lack of ship slots.

Another problem is that freight sources are imbalanced with regards to volume: a well-serviced factory could spill out much more tons of goods than a primary industry would do. E.g., consider a crude oil tanker which would carry the amount of 10 to 30 times the load of a tanker train and a container ship of comparable size: the latter would be loaded very much faster than the former.

> It would make ships more profitable as well as the bigger amount of goods would make up for their slow speed.

Well yes, but they´re already profitable.

regards
Michael

Is there any way to have a ship carry more than one type of cargo?

This is what ALL container ships do in the real world so IF it is possable and (relatively) easy to do then that might be a way forward.
I maybe old but at least I'm not dead (yet).
OK! I admit it I AM dead (from the neck up)

Looks like in dev things to me (don't recognize the ships), but anything MB released should be on his website (I believe I got the link in my sig, otherwise it might be in Linkage).

It defenitely is stuff in development. It will be part of the NewShipXL release, but that has yet to be finished, so no date can be given.
