Additional rail structures

Post by SVAndrei »

I was going on a rail trip last week, and i got an ideea that might be rather cool.. Besides having stations and gantry's, whould it be possible to have additional structures regading railroads, like diesel refueling stations, and so on? They don't have to neccesarly do something, it whould make the game a bit more realistic.

If someone would be willing to draw them, then IIRC they can be added as just visual graohics to stations, but not on their won...

It should be possible. I think a single railbuilding can be built individually as a station, but I've not tested this. [/AFAIK]

Now that we have irregular stations and no-track Station tiles I should think it would be possible to design eye-candy as long as they are done as station tiles (buffers anyone?) so that a coaling tower, a water tower and a fuel tower could be added to a station layout.

Another option (and I don't know if this is even remotely possible), design them as industries whose placement is limited to a tile adjacent to a track tile. (similar to how the brewery must be within a certain tile count of the city center)
Then they could accept coal and/or oil and produce nothing, much as the power plants do now.
Of course they would still have to be within the catchment area of a station, and they would use up an industry ID or two.

So, in theory it's possible?

I would think so. This needs to be confirmed by a coder.
If they say it is possible then all it would require is an artist to do the drawings and a coder to code them.
The problem is that these people are extremely busy with other projects and I am sure this would not be considered a priority.

If its to be the station option it might get done more quickly since there are a few station sets being developed now.

Not possible and, IMO, bad idea. We're still limited to 37 industry types and 90 total industries.

It is possible as non-passable station tiles, though.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

But those things are railway tiles. I think he meant non-railway tiles.

Here is my solution to this suggestion.
It would be nice to have specially drawn tiles but this works too.

First tile is a waypoint. This makes the whole station non-stop.
Then, from the USSet stations, I add a two tile oil refinery station to make sure I get at least one set of oil tanks.
Next, again from the USSet stations, I build over one of the oil station tiles with a one-tile coal mine station.
All this is in line with a depot and trains must pass through the fueling area on the way to the depot.
Voila! Instant service area.

Because the waypoint is built first, It is a waypoint so trains won't stop.
If you want the trains to be able to stop build the oil tanks first, and then it will function as a regular station, even after you add the waypoint.

I think I might rename "sheds" to "shops" ... more appropriate.
