Canal tunels

Post by fabca2 »

what's about canal tunels ?

As building canal is so easy (as much as building road or rail), it could be nice to have tunels also for canals, no ?

may be, it should not be too difficult to do in OTTD, I don't know...

This would probably be easy to implement, although the tunnels would be incredibly expensive. Since ship-lifts don't slow a ship down (maybe fix that?), they would be just as effective crossing a mountain as a tunnel, and still be cheaper...

they wouldn't be expensive, since they are just normal tunnels with water in it.

Would be very useful. Would be useful too to have aquaducts, but that's another subject.

Are canaltunnels easy to add?

SF = SourceForge
RFE = Feature Request (No I don't get the acronym either)

SF is Sourceforge, and RFE is a feature of SF. But it is already requested.

At least the answers are the same. It would be hard to understand if the answers didn't say the same

I can understand aquaducts, but water tunnels? Are they in use anywhere in real life?
They have to be big compared to a train tunnel because ships are bigger => A LOT more expensive

Canals are mainly only to join two seas/lakes. They are not supposed to be similar to roads or rails. That's why I don't think that tunnels/bridges should be implemented for canals. Besides: I've never heard of tunnels for canals in reality. We're talking long tunnels here. And aqueducts are/were used to transport water, not to have boats on them.

Bridges for boats excist in real life, but right now, what is the point. There is no slowdown and if you need something like that, the distance between the lakes you connect are too big

You do get canal tunnels and canal aqueducts. In fact there are several of each near to where I live, and some canal tunnels are over a mile long. (In fact the longest is over 3 miles long: have a look at http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/jim.shead/ ... nders.html for some canal engineering "wonders".)
But I think the size of boats in (O)TTD is totally wrong for the size of these structures. Where do you see ocean-going vessels going through tunnels? It's probably best to leave it as it is.

I like the Llangollen Canal aquaduct, since I live a few miles from it.

Very nice those pictures, and the tunnel is even supposed to be five kilometers long! But they all look like they're made for small boats. I wonder how they get big cargo ships through them.

they don't even get big cargo ships down 90% of canals.

Does OTTD have small boats which in reality will pass canals?

OTTD have large farries and oil tankers. I don't think the use canals (except the english canal, that is  )
Once OTTD accepts new vehicles, this could be a nice place to improve

I knew that. It was like: In OTTD canal tunnels they won't fit any cargo ships. In reality only small boats use canals. But if OTTD wouldn't have small boats, and we want to keep it real, canals would become totally useless. So in OTTD big cargo ships should use canals, and canal tunnels. So the tunnels must be made big enough for these cargo ships.

:? I hope I explained it in understandable language
