'Why a Transport Tycoon Clone is necessary'

Post by John Clark »

Hi guys,

I've wrote this article. I like your idea of a clone.
Don't ask me why I do that. I felt bored.
I wait for your answer.

Pretty Good.

There are a few grammatical mistakes, but those can be fixed.
I'll fix them, If you want.
You should send to to Transport Tycoon Extreme.
What's the password to unlock it.....?

That's pretty much the basic idea
The patch is a hobby of two people and who get helped by 2 new guys who try to add their own ideas
But we must face it, too many things we want are not feasable (do-able) because the code of TTD is not released and probably if released too difficult to change
That's why this new project looks promising because of the open character, once the engine finished we will be able to add vehicles, houses and exchange them easily over the web
But if I can't recognize TTD in it, then I probably will stick with the old game, just as long as it can be played on modern operating software that is
Well, back to work, lot's of it in the near future

yeah, send it over to tte@radondesign.nl, I will see it over, convert it and put it on my site. I will make a huge update in +/- 3 weeks with new layout, new articles, new code...

If you look at Simutrans, you'll notice it comes with a lot of *.pak files

Each .pak file defines an object, be it a building, a tree, a vehicle, an industry, a good or something else.

There is a tool to create .pak files from images and a object description (a text file). A preliminary version of this tools is available here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/simutrans/files/Makeobj/

(You must be a member of the Simutrans group to access it)

With this tool you can create new objects for Simutrans, i.e. new vehicles or buildings or trees or whatever. You can pass your new .pak files to friends to share them. OTOH if you don't like some object you can just delte the .pak file and remove it from the game (well, some objects are needed to run Simutrans core engine, so you can't remove all of them ... but removeing a tree or a vehicle works well ... don't remove a good unless you also remove all industries and vehciles that produce and transport it.)

In this regard, I think, Simutrans is as open as the TE/TM engine will be. You can replace virtually anything in Simutrans, including abstract things as good types.

ATM Makeobj is a bit difficult to use, and badly documented. We hope to improve this, so that anyone will be able to easily create new objects for Simutrans. Once we have a better version, Makeobj will be availbale for everyone. Until then, it's only for those who are subscribed to the Simutrans group.

OTOH subscribing is free and doesn't hurt, so actually anyone who wants to have it can get it - finally you can unsubscribe if you don't want to stay a group member after downloading Makeobj. But if you need help with Makeobj, the group members _can_ help so it's maybe a good idea to stay subscribed until you got it going.

I just didn't think of that option.

But OTOH I don't want to spread the tool over a million places. The Simutrans Yahoo group is a good place for it IMO. On the associated mailing list you'll meet people who are used to use that tool and who can help you if there should be problems and questions.

Once the final version is out, and there is documentation and some examples available I'll put the tool on the Simutrans homepage.

This forum isn't the place to spread Simutrans stuff IMO.

Was 'bout to say it was, when I saw it was the transport master topic (clicked link in email). So why not post it in the simutrans forum?

IMO this forum isn't the right place. The Yahoo Simutrans Group is around since many years and well frequented, and Simutrans has an official website. So IMO those are the places where Simutrans stuff belongs. Spreading stuff over more locations doesn't help the users to find it and doesn't help the maintainers to maintain it.

I agree, simutrans has a place here, but so have other projects
But only talking about it, if you have to post files on 3 different forums, then it gets confusing when you forget to update one or the other

I sent it to TT Extreme and posted it here. I see no reason to update it. (There is only one version!)
