As later discussed, it seems it is very hard to do this. Many things have to change, but I believe it will worth the effort as game will look much more realistic.

List of sprites to be changed/added (please add if not complete)

*current coast
+locks (the old ones have to stay for canal-canal locks
+add corner coast (the ones that don't exist yet)
+add whitewater front during flooding
+add lower brick walls/quays (4 instead of 8 pixels)
