Post by DrMilzbrand »

i've painted some graphics for OpenTTD. This are my first graphics for OpenTTD and may there some problems with palettes etc. included.
My first vehicle is a saxonian passenger car from 1916.

Not bad for a start!

But a little more detail would be nice.

Look for Purno's drawing tutorials for some hints and tips. :D

Keep up the good work! :D

Thank you for your fast answer,

I found a picture of a passenger car, that is very similar to the C2 Sa 16.

I think, I will paint some more better vehicles soon. For example the German Class. 156/252 and some passengercars from the DR (GDR).

As these coaches are based on DB Set vehicles, your "advice"

The diagonals look a bit long to me, see picture below where I've combined your wagon with a part of the SpriteSizes image. The verticals look a bit long too...

Those saxon coaches are two-axle and should be significantly shorter than a modern UIC 4-axle coach.

His diagonals are, technically, correct; it's TTD's screwy perspective that's wrong and means wagons have to be drawn shorter in the diagonal direction. :)

There's nothing 'screwy' about isometric projections, it's just that they don't look like real life...

Well, the original (DBXL) does conform to TTD standards, Milzbrand´s diagonal view being deliberately elongated. In addition, he accidentally copied part of the track to his car. :P

Longer vehicles

Post by DrMilzbrand »

Hello to all,

thanks for your good advises. :D
I think, it takes some time to learn it right.

In the CSD-Set, there are some longer vehicles, with a longer total length than the "old" Transport-Tycoon standard-length allowed. I don't know, how it works, but if I buy three czech EuroCity-coaches, they have a size of about 3 elements. In Transport-Tycoon three coaches means 1 an a half element. A wonderfull view, if an original-sized EuroCity is about to pass through the station in OpenTTD! By chance, I would guess, that it works with transparent "phantom" vehicles, that acheave the right length?
Like the coalwaggon of steam-locomotives, that are coupled automatic behind the locomotive.

May it would be better to draw the vehicles longer than the old Transport-Tycoon standard vehicles?

Yes, the vehicle was painted (sideview) by me alone. For the other sides i take the scatch of the DBSet as a backround, but modified. My intention was not to present this vehicle as my new vehicle, but to get some advises to make it in a better way.

With the help of Purno's Tutorial I've painted now the following vehicle.
A scatch of a german 2-axle Tanker of the DR. I took only colors of the OpenTTD-palettes. May it could be a little bit resized.

I didn't say there was anything 'screwy' about isometric projections. I said there was something 'screwy' about vehicle lengths in TTDP, which there is.

(namely, that the diagonal views are 50% of the apparent horizontal length of the horizontal views, when they should be approximately 70%).

Yes yes. Of course. Otherwise you´d be the very first guy copying foreign graphics without any "excuse" when trapped and shown up.

Oh yes, I understand. I will correct it next time.
The following Screenshot shows some coaches of the CSD-Set. They are longer than the normal vehicles. Also the diagonal length seems longer than a normal coach.

Afterwards some old graphics. May they a basic for some next vehicles.
Sorry Michael, next time without your using your graphics as basis for my pictures to be modified.

(and sorry for my bad english)

I corrected the lights a little but, but may it was not a good idea to start with a tankkar. Of cause, the reflexions on the curved sides are hard to paint, but I hope that it became a little bit better, than before.
