I've got an old laptop with Xubuntu 12.04 and I'm looking for an version of ttd that wil work, the new one requires libfontconfig (>=2.9.0)

I suppose you can't install libfontconfig?
Either way, older releases can be found here: http://binaries.openttd.org/releases/

You were trying to install the Ubuntu 14.04 package?
You don't need an old version, the generic Linux binary for 1.5.2 should work fine on 12.04.
