Tutorial Script

Post by Zhall »

Ok so, im putting together a tutorial for openttd that im going to put on youtube... Here is the script tell me what you think.

Oh ya, i can only speak english and some broken japanese... so... translators would be great if interested :)

Openttd 101 Script

Installation

First off, you will need to install openttd, open transport tycoon deluxe.
Go to http://www.transporttycoon.net/index and download and extract the game from the game section. Make sure to download the correct file for your operating system.

Next, go to http://www.openttd.org/en/ and download the latest stable. Run this file, and when it asks for the original give the location of the files you unpacked.

****************************************************************
THE BASICS
****************************************************************

Start a game.

To pan about the map you can hold down the right mouse button or use the directional pad.
Use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out.
You can also use x to jump around the map.

Pressing x will make objects on the map become transparent.
Pressing ctrl+b will show the bounding boxes of all game objects

Right clicking on any button will tell you about what it does.
Left clicking on an industry will tell you more about it.
To make money in openttd, you must take products from industries that supply them to industries that demand them.
The coalmine produces coal, and the power station demands it.

In openttd you can transport with trains, road vehicles, trams, airplanes, and ships.

-TRAINS

We will start with building a simple point to point rail line.

Click the build railroad track button to begin construction.
Use the station tool to build your pickup station at your Coal mine and your drop off station at the Power station.
The blue footprint indicates the station catchment area. Make sure the each industry is within this area, it will tell you what that station supplies and demands when in the correct location.

Now use the auto-rail (hotkey A) tool to build rail between the two stations.
You can drag this tool to make it faster.

Now build a rail depot along your line. Left click the depot and click the new vehicles button. Buy a train and 9 coal cars.
When building stations remember that each station tile can hold 2 train cars. The station we just built can hold 10 train cars.
Continue by giving the train orders. Select the go-to button and left click on the coal mine station, and then the Power station station.

The train will now go between both stations transporting coal. To improve the efficiency of this process, make the train full-load at the coal mine.

-ROAD VEHICLES

Press delete to close all of your windows.

Find a town, and build two bus stops at opposite ends of it.
Use the build roads tool to accomplish this.

Now build a road depot and purchase a bus.
Order the bus to go between the two bus stops.

Instead of making another bus, simply clone it off of the road.

-AIRPLANES

Press delete again to close all windows.

In order to make space for an airport, use the level land tool to flatten an area.
This house will also need to be destroyed, use the dynamite tool to remove it.

Now use the build airports button to build a city airport, make sure it accepts passengers and mail.
Now find another city and place an airport there.

Now select the aircraft hangar and build an airplane, then route it between the two airports.

-SHIPS

Open the mini-map by clicking on the display map button.

We will use this map to look at our current land ownership, as well as find a ferry route.
Begin by selecting the build ship docks button; build a dock near each town, a buoy in between both, and a ship depot.
Now make a passenger ferry, and route it.

-TRAMS

In order to use trams you will need to apply a Newgrf before starting the game. Some newgrfs can be applied during game play, but this is not recommended.

A Newgrf is a new graphic which add s or removes content from the game.

To easily acquire newgrfs click the Check online content button in the main menu.

Find a newgrf, and download it.

You will then have to add it and apply it.

To build trams, hold down the road tool button and scroll down to the tram construction menu.

Trams are much like road vehicles, except that tram tracks can be built over roads as well as on their own.

****************************************************************
A STEP UP IN THE WORLD
****************************************************************

-Mending mistakes

If you place something in the wrong place you can remove it with the dynamite tool.

The rail, signal, road, and station tools can be used with the remove function (hotkey r) in order to remove specific tiles only.

- Networking

Point to point rail networks are a poor use of your assets and capital, aside from transfers, which I will cover later.

Networks combine all of your rail, so that every train can reach every station that you build.

- Signals and stations

Signals are the building blocks of a network; they allow multiple trains to operate on a set of rails.

Use the signal tool (hotkey s) to place a signal.

If you hold ctrl while placing a signal you get a semaphore.
Clicking on it with the signal tool will make it switch sides of the track.
Using the signal tool and ctrl clicking on a signal will make it change signal type.

The first signal you will get is the entry signal
The second is the exit signal
The third is the combo signal
The fourth is the path signal
The fifth is the one-way path signal

Here is a basic use of signals allowing two trains to run on the same track.
Making an upstream and a downstream one way track allows for a street-like function
This rail system is known as a 1x1
2 downstream and 2 upstream would be known as a 2x2 and so on.

There are two types of stations.

- Ro-Ro stations

Roll-in Roll-out stations or Ro-Ro stations allow trains to enter a station from one side, and exit from another

- Terminus stations

Terminus stations allow trains to enter and exit from the same side

Each platform a station possesses will allow it to hold an additional train.

Pre-signals are needed before stations for trains to enter correctly.

Entry and exit signals can accomplish this well.
The entry signal will remain green (allowing a train to pass) as long as there are green exit signals beyond it.
This allows each station platform to load a train while restricting access to the station when it is full.

The combo signal can be used to increase the efficiency of this process.

The path signal can also be used in place of the exit and entry signals.

In order to quickly signal your line, you can drag the signal tool. Start on a pre-existing signal and hold left click and drag.

Holding ctrl while doing this will cause it to auto-signal the entire line, until it reaches a break in the line.

- Junctions

A network is all tied together with a backbone or mainline.

Junctions allow you to add on more stations to the network without building a new line entirely.

This is the simplest junction, allow a train to switch to another track.

Interfering junctions cross over the mainline, and can cause delays, path signals are recommended when using these types of junctions.

Non-interfering junctions are more effective because they do not disturb mainline traffic as it passes.

- Transfers

You can use transfers to increase the amount of raw materials that are at one central loading station or hub.
Transfers are often simple point to point lines that are completely separate from the rest of your network.

Transfer drop off stations must be a part of the station you want to increase the amount of raw materials at them.
You can hold ctrl while building a station to get options on station building.

- Converting rail

You can use the convert rail tool to convert rail into other better rail types, which give access to better trains.

****************************************************************
MAKING IT BIG
****************************************************************

-Key fundamentals

Distance, speed, and cargo amount.

In order to make ridiculous cash you must take a lot of cargo a far distance in the shortest amount of time.

Lines that span the entire map are not uncommon, and can really rake it in.

-Starting

The most important part of openttd is the first year.

You will need to establish a cash maker. This line should not span the entire map yet, but should go about 100 tiles.

The faster you can get a high income, the faster you can expand.

-Locating a place to start

Use the mini-map with the industry filter to find an area to start.

You can also use the industry directory to find industries that have high production values.

-Gentlemen, Start your trains!

The first thing you should do when you find a place to build is set down your stations, and get your first train loading at the pickup station.

Don’t forget to give it orders to unload at the drop off station, and that the drop off station actually accepts the cargo you are hauling.

Then continue by connecting the pickup and drop off stations with rail.

-Passing lanes

Starting with a conservative loan, you have to build conservatively.

Instead of building a full 1x1 rail line build small sections which will allow trains to pass each other.

This will help in the early stages of the game, but should be immediately upgraded once you have enough money.

After upgrading from passing lanes you will probably need more trains.

The clone tool will become your best friend in quick expansion.

Holding ctrl while cloning a vehicle will make those two vehicles share orders, which can be useful when your train count tips 100.

-Dual hauling

Dual hauling is the act of picking up raw materials at both sides of your line.

Trains will pick up raw materials, drop them off, and pick them up again.

This means that they will never be empty when they travel down the mainline and you will make double the amount that regular trains could make.

-What to avoid

DO NOT USE SHORT TURNS!

These turns slow your trains dramatically, simply don’t use them.

Masses of ungrouped trains. You can group your trains into neat groups which makes things easier later on down the line.

****************************************************************
MASTERING THE ART
****************************************************************

-Forget the money

After you become affluent at starting and making millions the game becomes more about making efficient, crazy huge networks that are fun to build and watch, especially when working as a team.

-The wiki
The wiki is located at http://wiki.openttd.org/OpenTTD
It is much more thorough but requires more reading, and has less visuals.

There are also tons of hotkeys listed on the wiki that can really help when it comes to building quickly.

-Openttd Co-oP

The gods of Openttd reside here; when they build the map begins to resemble a circuit board.

Check out their tutorials, they have great tips that even I am still trying to learn.

http://www.openttdcoop.org/blog/

-Practicing

It took me a few years to learn how to play, I didn’t have this tutorial, and the Wikipedia wasn’t as good as it is today.

It’ll will be hard your first time, but you’ll get better.

-Openttd Forums

Join the openttd forums and post questions, we’ll be happy to help.

-Playing online

Playing against others is a perfect way to become better at openttd.

Hit the multiplayer button and hit the find server button. Click join game when you find a game you like.

From here you can start a new company, join an existing company, or spectate the game.

Please enter a name for yourself before playing so you aren’t named player.

Sometimes I host a server, but sometimes im busy doing other things (such as this tutorial)

If you would like me to personally tutor you, please contact me at the openttd forums.

I'll be reading your post and editing my post to add comments if neccessary. Don't loose track of it until it says 'done' a the bottom...

Go to *** and download and extract the game from the game section. Make sure to download the correct file for your operating system.
That would be TTD and not OpenTTD. And there's absolutely no need to install TTD first, just make sure that you have the installation files available somewhere.
EDIT: One might be able to read this part a little differently. At least make sure that you name TTD and then you should know that OpenTTD is not an abbreviation of Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe. It's just OpenTTD.

Make that http://www.openttd.org/ as that's more general.

Then I'd spend a little more time on how to actually start a new game and the differences between the climates. Don't write a whole book on it though ;)

Make a clear distinction between the block and path signals. Tell viewers that they should either pick one of two kinds. Let them figure out combining both types themself. I'd say cover the two types seperately. Path signals are arguably the easiest to use for new users, as the safe waiting locations hold more or less true for block signals as well.
Sapphire united wrote:Wikipedia
That'd be either Wiki but preferably Manual.

Otherwise I think it's very thourough, especially combined with visuals from the game. Good work so far!

The 'TTD' in "OpenTTD" does not expand to "Transport Tycoon Deluxe". Nor does it expand to any other string. The full and official name of the game is exactly seven letters long: "OpenTTD".
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

for legal reasons

on the same note when you make the videos if u make them with the open grf set then maybe one day they can be included as a tutorial in the game at some stage in the future (optional download probably to reduce download size) would be brilliant for new players im sure even more experienced players could maybe learn a thing or 2

If wanted, I can knock a version out that hides the black boxes. It might glitch in certain places, but for a video that's probably better than the black boxes.
