German translation

Post by dihedral »

I would like to ask all germans (those who are interested of course)
to help complete the german translation

esp. if you play this game in the german language, it would be very helpful if you could post korrections of bad translations, too long translations, or if you could post translation ideas for what has not yet been translated.

thank you very much :-)

i have made this patch about half a year ago, it fixes the creation message of oil wells:

"Ölquellen werden [...] gebaut"

next to the male/female/neutral gender, it adds a "plural" gender.

while there, it fixes up some mess that always annoyed me in the prototype offer window, where the english text uses "vehicle", which has no appropriate general translation in german.

i'll gather some wrong translations throughout the next week and post them here.

PS: may i also post Korrections about your post? :p

Hey, I just worked over the german.txt file and added all missing translations. Please work on that file if you want to change something.

Well, it may sound a bit "uncommon" for the amateur´s ear (planes don´t "drive"), nevertheless it´s "official" in a sense the EU and patent offices are using these terms in exactly this way in translations.

Bear in mind that not only in railroading but also in other areas of transportation, sort of "technical terms" are being used.

E.g., we´re using "Kesselwagen" instead of "Tankwagen", although the latter seems to be the term amateurs prefer to use. :P

why can you not just post a diff? that is much easier for me
and no - dont simply work on one text file - that is very annying for me to work with that!
posting is better, as others can mention their thought to the changes also
and a full modified txt file is the last thing i wanna touch - a diff is fine by me :-P

@Michael: good point ;-)

So, what direction should translation use, for insiders, so amateurs can learn. Or the common used terms?

Well, I´d say it´ll depend on how exotic these "technical terms" would turn out to be.

E.g., "Kesselwagen" should sound convincing even to the amateur. OTOH, it´s not too many months ago that I first learned the term "Taschenwagen". 8)

Ah, good to hear that someone wants to improve the german translation - I'm playing on english since a long time because the translation was so... well... :P

In the patch settings there are a lot of strings that are too long, but I guess that is well known.

But something else that in my opinion needs to be adressed: The third option in the "Stations" tab has a very bad german translation.
In english it's "Deliver cargo to a station only when there is a demand" which is already a bit misleading.
It means that cargo from nearby Industries only appears on the station if a vehicle able to carry that kind of goods has at least once been at that station. (Opposite to standard TTD behavior, where the cargo always appears on nearby stations)

But the german translation of it is clearly _wrong_. It says "Liefere Fracht nur, wenn die Station diese annimmt" (only deliver cargo if the station accepts it). It sounds more like it means cargo that is on a vehicle only gets loaded off if the station accepts this cargo.

This, on the other hand, is something that automatically happens, except you explicitly set the "unload" flag on the vehicle order. So this patch option is imo very misleading for new players and should be renamed.

Here is the diff file and the txt file of the missing translations.

I also have some proposals for strings which don't fit on the button. Some of them match good, some are not very nice and I would like to hear your ideas!

There are some open questions:

- If there is a tooltip for a button, should it sound like:
"Klicke hier, um neu zu verbinden."
or more like
"Klicken Sie hier, um neu zu verbinden"
or like
"Stellt erneute Verbindung her."

- "Vollladen" with 3 l or "voll beladen" (I like the second better)

- "one way signals" are best translated as "Einwegsignale"? Sounds a little like "Einwegflasche".

- in the "world generation" window, the date button should be a little smaller, so the word "Datum:" fits there. Other languages like spanish have the same problem there.

How about:

- "neu verbinden"
- "voll beladen"
- "einseitiges/doppelseitiges ~signal" (~ = Haupt, Vor, PBS, ...)

?

how about: "Erzeuge Fracht nur an Stationen, an denen sie abtransportiert wird"?

PS: i wouldn't want the game to call you "Sie", it should rather be "Du". better avoid it entirely.

maybe something along the lines of
"Fracht nur an Station liefern, wenn Transportmöglichkeit besteht"
("Only deliver cargo to station if a way of transportation exists")
Would this fit into the frame? It might just fit (or not?)

I think that would describe that particular patch switch a bit better, but I'm still not too happy with the "an Station liefern", it still sounds as if we were talking about a vehicle delivering something to a station, not the cargo from some Industry magically appearing at a station. How to put this into good words?

Maybe rather "Industrien beliefern nur Stationen mit Transportmöglichkeit"? ("industries only deliver to stations with a way of transportation")
While it doesn't sound very good, it's more clear what it actually does, compared to the above suggestion or even the text that is used now.

Maybe you or someone else can think of something better than that still ;)

edit: "Industrien beliefern nur Stationen mit bestehendem Transport"? or "passendem Transport"?
It all sounds dodgy, but it's hard to think of something that describes this feature fully and _doesn't_ sound weird.

Fracht erst bei bedarf an Stationen verfügbar (?)

just to add a few other words like 'bedarf' (it's shorter :-P)

btw. instead of trying to fix "too long" translations in the "advanced settings" ("erweiterte Einstellungen"?) window, that window should be made aware of the length of the translations instead. there slowly is work being made towards that. i'd suggest to sit that one out, and hope that it's done before 0.7 :)

yes - most annoying are those over-length strings on buttons.... esp. if they overlap with other strings.
those that are not translated at all
those that are translated really really badly :-P
