Ro-Ro Depots?

Is it possible with OTTD to make a Ro-Ro Depot which could be placed in a section of mainline track?
sorta like this:
Code: Select all
=>====>[DEPOT]>====>=
=<====<[DEPOT]<====<=
> represents the direction of the signal
= represents the track
[DEPOT] well that's obvious.
What I was also thinking, if such a thing is possible, then could it also be possible to use the same drag'n'drop method as stations for depots, so that the depot fits into the particular section of track wether it be a 1x2 or 1x4 or however long your biggest train is?
If this thing is possible, then you could put one of these inline depots onto each entrance track into a station - and/or on the exit track.[/code]

And the trains would just zoom through those depots, right?

I like the idea, but not zooming through. It has to stop for a while in the depot (just as it is now). But when it is a ro-ro depot, it won't jam up the network.

well I was thinking if this were possible and the same drag'n'drop method for stations could be used, then you could split the track like so:
<> is a two-way signal
> is a one-way signal
Or maybe if it was a ro-ro depot, you could have one train coming in and one coming out at the same time - but obviously only one train leaving at a time.....otherwise you'd get crashes on the track

How about a two-tile depot. One train entering on the first tile and a second train can leave the deport on the second tile.
Which also means that ro-ro depots are only oneway! to prevent crashes.

as in like this:
??
That was actually the idea I had first, but then I thought that it might be a better idea where the depot is on the main track, not on a branch-track[/code]

It would look like an ordinary depot, but the track would be visible.

Ro-Ro-Depot and bigger Depot would be nice.
But your idea with every 4 tiles a depot like a signal it STUPID. What is that? Did you ever seen this in real? That is like "cheating"
You don't need to find a better solution for "maintenance of trains" in that way. Disable "breakdowns" when you don't want reality

a Ro-Ro type dept would be great, the train would stop for the usual time, and carry on moving.

I'm not on about placing a depot every 4 tiles - I'm simply suggesting an idea of something which could be placed either inline with the maintrack or as a small siding where trains can divert off to service.
Also, for example with the original TTD, how realistic were some of the 'forced servicing' depots?

good point

i would love something like this... my current way of forcing trains to service becomes very messy along main lines (resorting sometimes to using several tracks with a depot each to get them working remotly efficiently without clogging everything up.
Even if im doing it a very bad and old way, this would make it simplere to any new players(?), making it a worthwhile solution, surely?

I have came up with the same idea some time ago and even looked through the code... And it seemed a little bit tricky to do.

How about something like this...
The two depots should be joined together automatically if two are placed like this.

that is basically the whiole idea....
maybe it could be possible to combine Station properties (ie, 'in one way, out the other'), with the Depot properties (ie, servicing, building new trains, etc)..........
