Town authorities

Hello @ all!
First- great job about rewriting this whole thing;)

But now Ive got a question. Everytime I change the landscape the town the land belongs to becomes uuhm angry. The consequence is that Im often unable to build a station or whatever. Is there anywhere a setting which changes the behavior of the towns authorities? I played already with the landscaping setting- but either changing it to permissive or tolerant didnt change something.

The last version of ttdpatch I played wasnt that strict afaik ;) and I dont wanna change something within the source.

Actually, I think it's not for changing the landscape, but for cutting down the trees. (Not sure though)

Those settings are for destroying town-owned roads, bridges, tunnels, etc. The general strategy is to build the station first and then to go around landscaping.

Hi,

I have this problem when I bulldoze vast areas to make way for my network - but there are ways to get around it. Killing trees seems to harm your rating, but planting some increases it - so keep planting trees around the town, and your rating will go up.

Also, you could try bribing the town - but that isn't cheap :)

What sort of vast areas Aypok? You shouldn't really be bulldosing towns just so you can get a million passengers.

Hi,

Well, I like my network to all be on one level (so the trains don't have to go up hills all the time) - usually this involves destroying a large area around a town. When there's terrain in the way, I bulldoze it to suit me :) Same with stations.

Also, trees get in the way of my view. I know you can make them transparent with the options, but I like to just get them out of the way for a while. Then maybe replace them. If I'm feeling generous :)

I usually start by setting up 2 or 3 busstations (with busses) in the town. After this I build the stations I need. After that the big buldozing/landscaping.

The rating will drop to appalling very fast, but the busses will rebuild the rating in time. As an added bonus, the busses cause the town to grow. For a temporary boost in rating, you can plant trees.

Thx for the suggestions! But if ure playing on terrain wiht lots of mountains u often have to landscape large areas before placing a station otherwise u will have a station size of only one or two...

You should still place your station before though and extent it later, even if it is 1x1.

Hi,

I never said my destroy-everything-in-sight way was best, it's just my prefered method. I'm always trying new ways of doing things - especially now that I've found these forums packed with cool ideas :) A trial of a less destructive method may be in order...

I too like everything being on the same level, but you can still go arund the mountains, don't you? Personally I even think this looks very nice (and realistic, too), and its also better for your ratings.
Some people may say that this slows down the trains too much. In the beginning of the game this may be true, but let's be honest, later you don't really have to care about how fast your trains go, do you? You'll make money anyway.

Routes like that look good but as faster trains get introduced they end up getting abandoned (in real life) cos of their alignment causing trains to go slower. Good for tourist railways but not much else.

Better off digging a low level route thru the mountains thats more direct.

It's your game tho, I've banned electric trains/TGVs from my openttd games til electric tracks gets implemented but the way development's goin, it don't look like my network is gonna be electrified too soon :P .

The problem is that electric rails can be hacked in pretty easily, ala TTDPatch load-style, but that's not we want. If we do it, we want to do it right...and that might take a while.

Yep, that's what I like to do - although tunnels are good too :) But if you have the money to level a mountain, why not? :D I play the game for fun, not for realism.

So do I but part of the fun is running a reasonably realistic network too.

i dont realy see real rail companys leveling mountains to build theer lines through actualy they would stradle a valley side. or build a tunnel through it. of course if tunnles were used in real life it would have signals in but this isnt possible yet.

Klaus, where did you get that map? Is it in TTD? (Open or otherwise)

well if you mean this little greenish square in the upper left, it is the map overview and available in every game (5th button from the left, the one that shows a grey grid in the background and a yellow "N" before it.

If you mean the landscape, I've made it myself in the landscape editor...

I'm playing 3.3.
You might find this scenarion a bit too easy (especially the two towns with the left-over space for stations)...
