In the vicinity of the once small border town, work began on the construction of railway repair yards in 1868. Land near an already existing railway station was chosen for practical reasons. Workshops and repair shops soon became the main workshops of the railways of that time and were expanded after only 6 years. In World War II, a large part of the workshops was destroyed by bomber raids. Immediately after the war, however, the restoration and further expansion of the workshops began. At that time, the workshops employed around 1,000 workers. The main focus of the workshops was the repair of steam express locomotives. After 1974, a new roadway was added (the original one burned down in 1955) and wagons were repaired in the workshops. In 1979, the last operational steam locomotive was repaired in the workshops, and the workshops reoriented themselves to the repair of electric and diesel-electric locomotives and railcars. After the changes in 1989, the political representatives of the state pushed for the privatization of the workshops, but the foresight of the railway experts did not allow it. The workshops are therefore still owned by the railways. They have recently been completely modernized, the buildings and facilities have been repaired. And the repair and maintenance of both current and historical vehicles began. And not only those owned by the state railway, but in the area you can also meet machines of private or foreign carriers. It is certain that the prevention of privatization was a good step and the workshop brings considerable financial profits to its owner.

(I admit to some inspiration from the history of the ŽOS České Velenice, surely many people recognized that)

(přiznávám určitou inspirací dějin ŽOS České Velenice, to jistě mnozí poznali)

In 1932, the construction of an airport for the local Aeroclub began near the regional capital. The airport grew rapidly and owners of large companies began to use it to travel to business partners. During the World War, it was used by the occupiers, who built new halls for the assembly of fighter planes on the surrounding land. After the war, the airport became civilian again and, due to its excellent location, was used more and more for travelers traveling to tourist destinations, first in Europe, but increasingly for overseas flights. At the turn of the millennium, the airport was significantly modernized, a new security hall was built, the control tower was repaired and modernized, new internal roads, engineering networks and a security center were established. The airport has become an important transport hub for the entire region and is used by a huge number of both passengers and freight carriers.

On Sunday 2024-07-07, we had a special travel agency train that brought tourists. They got out and went to the castle. And when they returned, the train took them to the Slovak city of Bratislava. It was raining like it's pouring from a watering can, but I went there and filmed it ;-)

I think this is in the wrong place (Remember Garry's Post: viewtopic.php?t=90763) :D
But still this video is good, so many different paintings in one train. I think I ever saw "ČSD", oh, that is more than 30 years ago...

When the railway arrived in the district town at the beginning of the 20th century, a depot with a circular draw was built there for the maintenance and storage of steam locomotives. Thanks to the railway, there was a huge development of the city and the nearby industry. Hand in hand with the development of the city, the density of train connections increased and it became necessary to build a second draw. As you can see, the depot has survived even to the present day, when historical specimens, especially steam locomotives, are stored in them. But a large part of the depot is also used by diesel and electric traction.

The nodal railway station, where tracks from seven directions converge, was created gradually. Until it became a vast metropolitan station with 18 platform edges. Long-distance express trains cross the station, but to a greater extent, many passenger trains start and end their journey here, only to start their next journey in a few moments.

Průmyslový rozvoj v 19. století znamenal mnoho změn v oblasti dopravy a výroby.

Najdeme zde mnohé příklady moderní architektury 20. a 30. let. Počet obyvatel koncem 20. století dosáhl téměř 100 tisíc.

Ve městě vzniklo několik univerzit a vysokých škol. V 90. letech vzniklo kromě krajského divadla i několik dalších divadelních scén, muzeí a galerií.

In 1265, King Otakar founded the city of Budywoyz at the confluence of two large rivers. The ground plan of the newly emerging city was ingeniously measured by the royal burgrave, with a grid of streets connecting a square square measuring 133 x 137 m. Two churches and a number of burgher houses around the square, including the town hall, were built. The entire city was surrounded by walls with fortress towers and three city gates.

Immediately after its foundation, the city became the power and economic metropolis of the southern regions and a support for royal power. Its privileges were strengthened in the 14th century by King Charles, which is why the city became a center of trade and crafts. Silver mining and coinage in the nearby village of Rolfov also contributed to its wealth.

Industrial development in the 19th century meant many changes in the areas of transport and production. Regional authorities settled in the city and it also became the seat of the provincial court. In 1832, the first horse-drawn railway car, which was the first on the European continent, left the regional capital for the capital of a neighboring state. A pencil factory, enamel factory, tobacco factory and breweries were also established in the city.

The twentieth century brought far-reaching changes in all areas of life. We can find many examples of modern architecture from the 1920s and 1930s here. The population reached almost 100 thousand at the end of the 20th century.

Several universities and colleges were established in the city. In the 1990s, in addition to the regional theatre, several other theatre stages, museums and galleries were established. Tourism increased significantly and the related development of accommodation, restaurant and hotel services. A large number of shopping centres were added. The city became a centre of culture, trade and even an economic centre.

The railway began to develop rapidly from the beginning and although it was initially used mainly for the transport of various goods, it was also used by people traveling for other experiences, but especially for business trips. Therefore, railway companies began to send trains for the transport of people from all corners of the southern regions. Thus, railway lines from five directions converge in the regional capital. The city station thus grew from a small station to its current form, where the freight station is separate from the passenger station. Even so, both the passenger and freight stations are at the edge of capacity. For the future, it is therefore being considered to transfer the freight station to new premises on the outskirts of the city and to build a large passenger station on newly acquired land.
