True fact: I have never been on an airplane, and I'm not sure if I ever will. But I do find them fascinating. I'm an avid fan of Kermit Weeks, who is one of the world's greatest aviation experts who has spent much of his life preserving and restoring a wide variety of aircraft produced since the Wright Brothers. He houses one of the largest personal collections of vintage aircraft in the world at his private airport in Florida.
I particularly like the concept of flying boats, they just appeal to me as very utilitarian and useful. Kermit is the owner of one of the last existing Short Sunderland flying boats, which he personally flew from England to the US and remains in full flight-ready condition today.
Favorite is a very hard call. I think i am going to have to give this to the wonderful transport the Douglas DC-3. While i have never flown in one , have been in 2 that were in flying condition on the ground. The most moving thing i ever saw was a DC-3 in a museum, in Seattle Washington. As it hung from the ceiling , the museum guide pointed out it's features, then his voice broke, he said "were losing this plane.... it is going back into service" even now it brings a tear to my eye. Perhaps it had been a museum piece, but was going back to being a flying machine.
