I've been playing for a while now, and have (I think) an alright game happening. But I've just realised that I'm a bit outdated, as I'm playing version 1.7.1

If I download the latest, 12.2m will I be able to open my city?

Yes! You are usually able to upgrade without problem, so go ahead.

As everyone is saying, you can load the saved game. Just be aware that some of the game rules have changed, so maybe routes that were profitable before are no longer as great, or some stations might start/stop accepting some cargo types.
