Used to play this a lot some years ago before all the new trains were added (alongside different AIs etc.) I stopped playing because I didn't enjoy the complexity and difficulty (I experienced) in getting a network set up with the new trains - they're just so damned expensive! I've got the 2cc stuff installed.
Is there a way to get back the vehicles that came as part of the standard vanilla game? Or good alternatives? Alternatively, any strategies for making the 2cc stuff work.

Just go into NewGRF Settings on the main menu and remove the mods you don't want to play with, then start a new game.

(You can't remove them from a savegame already in progress though.)
