Airport Radius

Airports used for civil transportation, like passengers and mail, should have a larger radius. Right now, the radius of only four squares requires you to dynamite a crater in a city just to get it a bit in the center. If the city has grown, that would be impossible, because a city never lets you remove that many buildings.
Therefore the radius should be improved, to say 10 squares.
One could say: just transport the passengers and mail to the airport by bus and truck, or train, unload, fly accros the map, unload on another airport, and then transport them back to the city. But that would make the planes lose money, and that's just my point.
Airports for industrial purposes shouldn't have an increased radius. So the increased radius should only work for passengers and mail.

Incorrect.
You don't need to transport them back to the city, if the airports accepts passengers and mail (which is quite easy on the edge of a city) that's enough. Only the feeding buses will be making a loss. In ttdpatch this is solved by also giving the feeding services some of the income, which results in no loss.
And with some advance planning, having an airport in the middle of a big city is quite possible.

But, when the airport on the outskirt accepts passengers, the delivered passengers will dissappear and produce revenue. So the airport should be AWAY from the city, because as soon as it accepts passengers, it won't work anymore...

No, because if you use a feeder service, by that I mean that you give the bus the order 'unload' at the airport, passangers will not 'disappear' but will wait at the airport until a plane picks them up.

Prior to posting my previous reply, I tested that. It didn't work...
I attached a screenshot to show my test-setup.

Is the shared profits thing from the patch implemented yet? It isn't in the latest release but I am not sure about the SVN version.

'Shared Profits' is closely linked with 'Unload'. None of them are in OpenTTD as of yet.

I once had a game in original TTD, some years ago, where I built an airport over 20 tiles away from my HQ city, and I had a maglev feeder service. The airport was exclusively Dinger 1000's, roughly 10 of them (yes, there were many traffic jams) in total that all went to destinations on the other side of the map, and I made a #$@#load of money from this system. But the planes only made money going from the airport, so that was a problem. In effect, the planes were a feeder service for the maglev that took passengers to town. The other maglev dropped them off at a loss. hope this helps.

A good reason to do this would be to counteract the _really_ dumb AI.
I'm sure you've all seen the AI put an airport in such a place as there is only 1 house (or so) within it's catchment area. With increased catchment, the AI can still build it's airport on the outside of the city, but with an actual money-making service.
I doubt anyone is going to make it so as the AI is able to destroy city buildings to clear a 6*6 square next to city centres.
with planning you can have a big airport in a city without destroying buildings
... true. However that restricts the area into which the city can grow.
