I have downloaded the Canadian City Buildings, Trains/Railways and International roadset GRF from BaNaNaS, but the game does not find them. They are in the newgrf directory along with all tehe other GRFs. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? I play version 1.4.2 og OpenTTD.

Did you unpack the .gz files that it's downloaded inside?

Ive never had to unpack my grfs. Its worth noting that grfs activated only apply to new games, were you loading a game with grfs enabled in the main menu?

openttd can read uncompressed archives (tar), but not compressed ones (zip, rar, gz, ...)

Unpacking and a rescan did the trick. I found it rather odd that the filetype were gz, but did'nt give it much thought as unpacking never have been needed with any of the other GRFs downloaded.

BaNaNaS automatically bundles files in a gzip compressed archive. When content is downloaded from within the game it automatically unpacks it. If you download it from the website directly you'll need to unpack it. Files inside a .tar archive do not need to be unpacked (it's an uncompressed, unencrypted archive format) and the game of course can read .grf and .txt files.

The GRFs was a dissapointment though. First of all they crashed with almost every other GRF I was using, and when I tried using only the Canadian ones the graphics where all garbled up, Guess I won't be using them.

I've never encountered any issues with them, other than a few cases where compatibility was not possible and the NewGRF intentionally disabled itself. These cases are well-known and documented. I've never encountered any problems with garbled graphics, though. Care to post a screenshot and the NewGRFs you were using, along with the version of OpenTTD you were running?

It looks like you have inadvertently toggled the color pallet to the wrong version.

From the main menu (startup screen), select NewGRF settings, highlight the NewGRF and click "Toggle palette". Then click "Apply changes" and you're ready to go.

Looks like OzTrans has deliberatedly sabotaged the GRFs; the last uploads all have the garbled graphics and other problems, which can only have been actively introduced. Thanks OzTrans, much appreciated.

So childish, and seriously how do you guys allow this to happen?
Some servers got screwed over by this!

You've not been "screwed over". Just stop using the grfs.

It's possible that the deliberately-sabotaged grfs could be removed from bananas, rolling them back to the previous version. But if those previous versions contain internal checks which prevent them from working on current versions of OpenTTD, what's the point?

Better to just let it go and find other NewGRFs to use. Or try your hand at creating your own, if you think the departure of OzTrans has left a gap in the market. :)

Meh perhaps youre right, reading on other posts by transoz it seems like his way of handling his GRF was by strict rule and law like in North Korea, perhaps the set should be called that instead. (strict version allowance, disabling grfs when others are detected, etc)

Too bad so many GRF developers are so *puke*
Best to boycot of whatevers left of it
