[OpenTTD] Warraweah Transport (256 years and counting)

I loaded up this game after a while, and was so surprised at what exactly we (it's an online co-op game with 1-4 people building the same company) had managed to build.

We had only two rules:
1) Choose one Factory, Sawmill, Steel Mill, Power Station and Oil Refinery. Then take everything on the entire map to them.
2) Try to build thing organically, without too much planning.

The map is a random 2048x2048 in the temperate zone.

Factory Station:

This was the first station built, and was next to a lake which has since disappeared.



Steel Mill Station:

The Steel Mill had spawned between two small towns (Warraweah & Sarepta Park). It was nice and close to the Factory to begin with, but has been really difficult to expand since. You can also see the High-Speed Station, which has passenger connections to much of the map.



Sawmill Station:

This area was a hill filled with forests, next to the small town of Rhatigan. Notice the 5 double tracks built to fit a width of 6 grids.



Oil Refinery Station:

The Oil Refinery was not even close to the original city, and was neglected for a long time until Oil Rigs started amassing themselves.



Power Plant Station:

The Power Plant station was built far away from the main city, but it has forced us to build some pretty heavy long-distance infrastructure.



Main Intersection, with 9 double-tracks heading to & from the city:

This intersection handles at least 1000 trains, all 8-20 grids long. It pretty much connects everything to everything else. And this is only the middle part of it.

Combined Subway, Train & Tram map:

The lines are centered around four main points, all relatively close to each other.

Warraweah:

The first station built, in the late 1870's, it is now the center-point for local traffic. With 8 lines running through it, in addition to goods trains from the factories, it is the busiest station in the city. It is also used by a long-distance passenger line that has been running since the 1910's, though these days the trains are powered by Hydro-Cells, not Steam.



Warraweah Highspeed:

Originally called Warraweah Sidings, this was a small station servicing a small housing district. However, once the Highspeed train program began in the 1970's and 1980's, it was transformed into a major hub and renamed into Warraweah Highspeed. It too is serviced by 8 different lines of local traffic. In the 2030's a new Maglev line was constructed from the Highspeed station to the new long-distance Maglev station in Horse. The stations importance was further increased after the $2,000,000,000 (2 billion dollar) construction project of the world's first Vacuum Tube track to Rutherford Ridge.



Busby:

Following the rapid expansion of the city in the 20's, a new line of elevated track was built, and Busby was the first station to open. Since then, it's central location in the middle of the city has meant several new lines have been built through it, and it currently hosts 7 train lines and 1 subway line. The area is made even more busy as almost all Iron Ore transported to and from the Warraweah Steel Mill goes right through the station area.



Warraweah Airport:

Originally called Westside Heights, this station was part of the original two elevated railways that have formed the backbone of passenger traffic inside the city. The Warraweah airport was chosen to be built in this area in the 1950's, and ever since the station has seen a steady growth in both passengers and the amounts of lines passing through it. It currently hosts 7 different lines of rail traffic.

No replies make me :( but I shall persevere!



Today I'll show some history of the Westside Factory station - the first station built in the game in fact. The place was chosen as it was close to the original town-cluster. I forget what they were [maybe someone can tell me how to extract the random map seed & settings from my current save?] but Westside was, at the time, a small town of less than 1000 people. The factory was in a picturesque location, next to a river.


The first save I have is from 1940:

This is 65 years into the game, and the factory is already a very busy station with 10 platforms.



The next shot is 13 years later, from 1953:

The station itself hasn't changed at all, but you can see the new tram-line built across the lake. You can also see the first motorways built around the growing city. The truck-station has also been expanded.



Unfortunately no saves remain of the largest period of expansion from the 50's to the 80's. [Most of this expansion happened during a 2½ hour train ride from Groningen to Voorhout]. However, in this shot from 1981, you can clearly see the huge amount of progress:

The lake has been almost completely drained to make way for the district of Vegre. The passenger lines have all been electrified, and new motorways have been built. All steam locomotives have also been replaced by American diesel engines.
You can still see one of the older ALCO DL-109 engines pulling a goods train into the city, while all other cargo trains are powered by the legendary EMD F40PH:

In fact, at this time the company had around 600 F40PH's in service.

Meanwhile the station itself has been enlargened at least twice, as can be seen by the old track-fragments.



The next shot is from 2013:

The city around the station has kept on growing, as has the station itself. New truck stations as well as several new train platforms have been built. In fact, this was such a successful lay-out that for the next ~80 years the station remained almost completely unchanged. By now, cargo trains had all been upgraded to the American GE Genesis. Goods traffic had been converted into electric, using the Swiss Lok 2000 locomotive.



The next upgrade can be seen from this save from 2093:

Increased traffic has meant increasing the amount of incoming northern lines to two. The truck-station has also gone a major upgrade. This was a period of neglect for the Factory station for two major reasons:
1) The main lines were packed with trains queuing to get into the city and
2) Expanding anything inside the ever-growing city had proven to be extremely difficult.



However, during the next 20 years I took up that challenge. This shot is from 2133:

The great breakthrough came when I realized I could move two exiting tracks to go through a city without too much damage. This lead to the possibility of having three incoming tracks and three platforms for each track. The problem that remains is how to get all those goods transported out; currently only 23-26% are.

that is a huge network, at which map size are you playing? 1024^2 or 2048^2?

and why do you use a wood train with one coal hopper at the end?

It's the max size, aka 2048*2048.

The reason for the hopper wagons at the ends of trains is simple enough:
When we started this game, the 2CC set didn't have any trains before 1930, so we used 2CC & the US train set together. However, the US train set required cabooses at the end of all trains. Once we got into the 70's and cabooses weren't needed, I auto replaced them with hoppers, as hoppers can transport wood, coal, grain & iron ore; in other words about 80% of my trains cargo. And seeing that we already had ~1000 trains, doing them manually was not really an option.


Btw, would anyone be interested in the savegame? It's about 9mb currently.



Later today I'll do a thing on my Railway Museum, but here's a thing I recorded last night after I realized I'd forgotten to send an F40PH over to my museum:

i can see all the legendary American steamers from NARS

a 9 MB save-game!?! , that's at least one way to choke my pc.
if you want to upload it, use 7-zip or winrar and pack it into an archive file and split it up in several parts. (I can help you if you like)
you seem to run the game quite smoothly, what are your specs? (video card, CPU, etc..)

Thanks guys, yeah I felt this game was somehow "special" compared to the tons of other saves I have.

Online co-op with voice chat with 2-4 people in the same company + a rule to deliver everything into one place = definitely the way to go if you want the most fun out of this game ;) Oh and plenty of innuendo about "I have so much wood waiting down here" & "How are we supposed to move all this wheat?" (Anyone who speaks Dutch will understand the second one)

That trip actually took ~9min, but I doubled the speed in editing. Otherwise it would be too boring :P

As for my specs, I have a 3.2GHz AMD triple-core, 8gb of RAM & an ATI HD5770. Higher mid-range I guess. While the game is running, attempting to fully zoom out in the middle of the city makes the game unresponsive for about 5-10secs ;)

Rarring/Zipping the save file has no effect as they are already compressed. I have my own ftp so hosting isn't a problem.

it won't get smaller, but you can split it up in several files of e.g. 3 MB, the PC you have is more than mid-high. I would consider it on a scale from 1 to 10 approximately 8,7

and indeed wheat is something completely different in Dutch, Amsterdam is very famous in the world for this produce.

I really like it that you play this with multiple players and with voice chat, it helps when you do it. And transporting everything to one city is a big challenge.

Eh, I feel your specs-knowledge is a bit outdated, as I bought all the major parts (MoBo, CPU, RAM, GPU) a year ago for a bit over 300€ ;)

Starting from the top tracks:

The first two trains have 4-4-0 American locomotives built in 1884. These trains were the back-bone of the company since it's creation in 1875 up to the early 1900's. As you can see these trains are wood-burning as the tender is filled with wood.
Power: 659hp
Max Speed: 96km/h

The third train has a later model 4-4-0 American, from 1894. These trains were about 50% more powerful than the older models, and were the first coal-burning trains used.
Power: 913hp
Max Speed: 96km/h

Fourth we have the 4-6-2 Pacific. This example was built in 1939, and these were used by the hundreds hauling everything from passengers to coal.
Power: 1724hp
Max Speed: 128km/h

The next two trains were possibly the most long-used locomotives in the fleet: The 2-10-4 Texas. These two were built in 1938 & 1947, and were used for the long-distance cargo traffic. They were in fact used all the way to the late 1970's as nothing could mach the sheer power they had.
Power: 5070hp
Max Speed: 120km/h

The last steamers are actually still in use in the Northern areas: The 4-4-4-4 Duplex. These two were built in 1944, and they were the bullet trains of their time: Moving at a staggering 185km/h they were used as express passenger trains, and some still are.
Power: 4664hp
Max Speed: 185km/h



Unfortunately many of the Steamers used during the years have not made it through the replacement projects: The 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler, the 4-4-2 Atlantic and the 4-6-4 Hudson were all important locomotives of the fleet in their time.

Next we jump into the Diesel era: First is the EMD E-Unit, built in 1962. Using the dual-engine setup, these could deliver almost three times the power and travel 20% faster, with only a small increase in running costs when compared to the 4-6-2 Pacific.
Power: 2433hp
Max Speed: 157km/h

The second Diesel is the Alco PA, this example built in 1966. The Alco was slightly quicker than the EMD, but had slightly less power. These two types were used side-by side, depending on the task and who was building them.
Power: 2281hp
Max Speed: 164km/h

The final locomotive on display is the EMD F40PH, this one built in 1981. This locomotive finally ended the reign of the Steamer, as well as the other various types of locomotive used. Before being replaced by the GE Genesis, the company had over 1000 of the locomotives pulling cargo all around the map.
Power: 3042hp
Max Speed: 165km/h

But wait, there's more!



This time showing the original bits of my oil network. Each of these oil trains is carrying a hair over 2 million liters. The main track was built in the mid-1980's, to be used for 3-5 stations. Now the track is filled up, as it is being used to service at least 10 stations, all producing millions of liters of oil per month. I'd build more tracks, but where the hell am I going to make them fit ?(
