Work has begun in Birmingham City Centre for the Midland Metro Extension linking Birmingham Snow Hill (the current terminus) to Birmingham New Street by way of Corporation Street.

My question - Where are the bus stops on Corporation Street being moved to? I have a suspicion that they are being moved to somewhere near Moor Street?

Also, it says that trams should be ready to run in 2015. It actually takes 3 years to complete and test a 0.9 mile extension?

Does seem strange as the major engineering project, the viaduct, has already been built.

I don't think it took that long to install the much more extensive city centre networks in Manchester and Sheffield 20 years ago, but then there was probably less traffic to need to divert back then. And before anyone else says it, I know that Sheffield is not Birmingham!

Close all of the city centre off at once and you'd have it done in 6 weeks. But then you'd also kill the city centre.

You might as well demolish half of the bullring and put a fecking HSR station through it.

Well, as they close the City Centre off, they can build Alan's dream project

Might require more than 6 weeks to bulldoze half the city centre and replace it with a 34 platform Pendolino terminus!

But yes, removing half the city centre's bus stops to extend the Metro to New Street? Doesn't seem really worth it, although the goal is of course to extend it westward to Hagley Road.

TBF I do worry about Corp Street. That's gonna be several accidents - trams can't stop as fast as buses.

At least it'll give more exposure to the Metro. The majority of Birmingham doesn't even realise there are trams in the city!

There isn't many accidents on the Manchester Metrolink, and it goes through the very Centre, an idiots like to play Chicken with them. I imagine, it'll be the same in Birmingham. Few close calls, but never anything Major.

Two things to counter this:

And the fact Corporation Street is down a hill, and reaches the bottom as it crosses New Street - which is a busy shopping street.

The Pedestrian according to that had unfortunately stumbled into the path of the Tram whilst attempting to stop himself. However, the Physical features near Birmingham's Corparatiom street could be a problem.

Trams can stop bloody sharpish with the emergency electromagnetic brakes that they have.

I really cant see the point of the Birmingham City centre Metro extension...

They should have built the proposed Wolverhampton - Walsall route instead.
Especially since the train service between them has been stopped again, meaning that you have to catch a train from Wolverhampton to Birmingham, and then change trains to get to Walsall.

Ill never understand councils and their mental ideas.
