Photo Of The Month - February 2012 Entries

Hi all!

Well, after a conversation with some members previously, we're going to try and see if we can get the old Photo of the Month stuff kicked off again.
This is pretty much a trial run this month to see if enough people are interested - and I really hope so!

Rules are pretty much the same as before. Some explained in further detail and some extra bits added such as safety advice.

Rules can be found Here.
Please read and familiarise yourselves with them if you haven't before.
Previous winners can also be found on that page.

How to enter:
Easy - simply upload your image to this topic to enter or link it from a trusted site such as flickr, photobucket, DeviantArt, your personal website etc.
Uploading is preferred as it keeps things together. If you're linking from a URL, having a small 'preview' image and a link to a high-res image would be helpful.

At the end of the month, this topic will close and a voting topic will be started with all the entries in for people to choose their top one.
Entries close on the last day of the month, voting will be available till the 7th of each month (approximately).
The winner will contact me about what they want the next theme to be and that will be posted in the entry topic for the next month. Then we repeat from there. Simple.

If anyone wants to make suggestions, has feedback or wants some information added to the wiki, please voice it.
In particular, I'd like to expand the safety section to cover all modes of transport at some point as a guideline for anyone new or people with concerns over what they can and cannot do. If anyone could help with that, please do. It would be a great help! :)

Right, so let's get the ball rolling.

Theme: Light and Colour.
I suggested perhaps having the starting theme to do with "Light and Colour" as that opens it out to a range of things.
From long exposure, saturated pictures, sepia, black and white, colourful landscapes, night shots, etc. Allows for a lot of types of photos whilst still keeping some kind of theme.

All the best everyone and have fun. Let's hope we can resurrect and reboot this old competition :D

I have a question that I am confused about:

In the rules it says:

The photo MUST belong to the entrant. Photos must be taken by YOU. They must be your photo and not someone else's.

When I saw this subject, I instantly knew what I wanted to do. There is a railway terminal that I managed o find a VERY, VERY old picture of. I wanted to take the old image, and put it in the current 2012 picture. Is that allowed?

That appears to break not only one rule
9. Photo-shopping/editing of images is not permitted.
(assuming I understand you correctly)

Can I also confirm on the theme, is there an implied transport theme or can I enter anything that falls under Light and Colour?

Only self-made photography is allowed and the aim of this game

Howat123 - The photo must be taken by you. You may not use someone elses photo. As long as it is your own photo, no matter how old or new, it is permitted.
If there is an old photo you want to re-create in your own image, I see no major rule being broken there so long as you have taken the image yourself.

lawton27 - The photo entry must be related to transport in some way. We always had a monthly 'theme' such as 'departure' 'detail' 'atmosphere' etc to revolve around and people seemed to want to keep that according to posts and messages.
So long as the picture is transport related and falls under the theme, it's all good.
For example, you could have an old sepia/black and white photo of a station, a plane flying into a sunset, a time lapse of a busy railway line/station, a night shot of a ship, a colourful spring day with flowers in bloom along a motorway etc. There's a huge range of things you could do or may even have. I wanted to have the theme very open so almost any photo could fall under the theme in some way.
If you're unsure whether a picture falls under the theme, post it and justify why you feel it does. I'm not one who's going to be disregarding entries for minor things. not on the first month anyway :)

Also in regard to rule 9, this refers to things like changing the image. Cutting bits out, masking things out, modifying it, adding graphics and general changing the photo past colour correction. Exceptions to this are watermarks (provided they are small and non-intrusive and small text on the bottom with the photographers name/contact. Those I will allow for anyone who may do photography professionally or wishes to have their name on their work.

Hope that helps! Any more questions, please feel free to ask or PM me :)

Direct Rail Services Class 66 No. 66412, in Malcolm Rail livery, accelerates out of Preston into the late afternoon sunlight with a loaded container train on January 22nd 2009. 66412 has since changed hands and is currently at Freightliner's Leeds Midland Road depot. The majority of the 66s bought by FL from DRS have since been exported to Poland, but this one isn't among them.

Sorry. They look interesting but those would come under the photoshop rule quite heavily.

My entry is a shot of the Athens-Pireus Metro line in Athens. This particular section of track actually cuts across the ancient Greek agora, notably the temple of the twelve gods. Many Greek citizens have been campaigning for the line to be moved Underground so as to preserve the ancient monuments.

When I saw the theme, the picture that immediately came to mind is one I took last year on vacation while in Paris:

This is a long exposure (2.5 seconds) taken while riding Line 14 (of the Paris Metro). The light streaks come from the emergency lighting and the signaling.

Now, that is honestly a creative interpretation of the title. And without kidding, it's the best one so far geared towards it.

So let this be my contribution: A rarely used quay with a somewhat rusty crane for unloading small boats on Runde, Norway. A larger version is available here.

Although I sometimes suggest that it was artistic cropping, the truth is I just wasn't quick enough ...

That pic is truly stunning. There is so much history in there. Wow, excellent.
