The Netherlands 4096x4096

The Netherlands is a small country, but I have decided to begin working on a huge 4096x4096 map of the Netherlands. I have used a heightmap that does not cover the whole map, so there will be sea to the west and east, but still there's plenty of space for a very detailed map. I have started with the west coast to have a clear orientation and to get the feeling with the distances. For the placement of towns and the large rivers (which were unfortunately not on the map, but are holes in the ground) I use both Google Maps and the Dutch "Bosatlas".
Also I have decided to clearly show the largest polders, which are included in the screenshot. The mainland is two tiles high, the polders one tile. Especially the Noordoostpolder and the Wieringermeer are clearly shown.

Town sizes are roughly their original size divided by 10 (for instance: The Hague has about 500,000 residents, but that is not very playable, so it's 50,000). The consequence is that the towns aren't all clogged up in huge agglomerations as in real life.

I will have some updates later on, I hope it is good news for all Dutch guys and fans of the Netherlands around here.

Urk is a former island in the Noordoostpolder, so is higher than the village of Tollebeek inside the polder

Good idea, I've now altered the Noordoostpolder and Wieringermeer. Oostelijk and Zuidelijk Flevoland will follow. I will only alter these polders in the former Zuiderzee, as for instance the Haarlemmermeer and Beemster are not bordering to the sea, it is no point doing so.

This is a start of the Frisian lake district. I've decided to use the official names as the most important names, for towns as well as other geographical names. This can be different for every Frisian municipality. Sometimes the Frisian name is official, sometimes the Dutch. If the names are different, it will be shown with a sign.
For instance, Leeuwarden is the official name, the Frisian name is shown underneath (Ljouwert). The neighbouring village of Koarnjum is in another municipality, which has the Frisian name as the official name. The Dutch name Cornjum is shown underneath in this case.

Is this map somewhere available?
I don't mind trying to finish it, either for myself or for others if people are interested...

It doesn't appear to have ever been made public. You may want to contact the OP via e-mail to inquire about its status.

BTA90 has send me the map, so let the work begin!

As you can see there's still a lot missing, including rivers and lakes.
I will probably use the same methods as BTA90, meaning the "Bosatlas" and Google Maps.

More screenies soon! (I hope) :D

I am flattered that you are using my patchpack for this but ...

You are aware that my patchpack is getting rather old and moldy and will never be updated to current trunk anymore?
You are aware that anything you create in it (scenarios and savegames) will only load in combination with my current patchpack? If/when I restart it will not be compatible neither as I am not crazy enough to start over and keep compatibility with it (TMWFTLB).
Also newer NewGRFs, AIs, Scripts, etc. are not and will never be compatible unless I restart or do a crazy amount of backporting (not going to happen neither ;) ).

May I suggest to export the heightmap (scenario editor) and starting over in clean trunk/stable OpenTTD?
2048 *2048 is already bigger than most people's computers will be able to handle in the forseeable future if they try and fill the map with vehicles completely. I only added bigger because it was requested. Initially I only changed for 1 mapside to be larger and reducing the max size of the other one while keeping the max tiles the same as trunk (read: from 32K*128 over 2048*2048 to 128*32K and everything inbetween).

Otherwise go for it, I'd love to play a game ?on/in/with? the country of my northern neighbours one day.

ps:
If you make your scenario in an older stable/trunk version than r22555 than you can load your scenario both in current trunk as well as in my patchpack if you wish to play with that anyway.

Hi,

I've started to work on a new Netherlands scenario (4096*4096) with ALL towns (i.e. all towns with blue signs, usually over 250 inhabitants). It is scaled such that all towns have approximately half of their real number of inhabitants (for example, Nieuw-Vennep, which in realitiy has 31.212 inhabitants, has 15.724 inhabitants in this scenario) which scales well with the surface area covered. So far, I have completed South-Holland, the largest province, and part of North-Holland. I'm planning to gradually expand, but I think it is playable as now, and it would be great to get some suggestions already. It also includes a clear +1 area representing the current dutch railway network.

Aand it's done, all dutch towns bigger than 250 inhabitants are on the map (+ a few more), total about 3000 towns. There is also a +1 level with the current (person) rail network. Enjoy!

Are there any industries done yet? Since I do not live in the Netherlands is rather hard to know where industries should be placed, and I bet most sources for finding industries will be in Dutch or unavailable (I live in Canada and I can rarely if ever find any industry information on Canada)
