I had some fun building a modellrailroadlayout on a small map, by making optimal use of space. Mods are not required, but I suggest you play it with the (old) automod. You could play the map as it is and buy and build the automobile industries later in the game to find the best place for them and to make the game more challenging. At least this is how I played it. I didn't want to use any boundary markers, but you shouldn't build any bridges over the water and use a pass going from Beckwourth over Portola to Spring Gardens.
I used some real existing names for towns, but the map is completely imaginary.

I finished the map a long time ago but am now just posting a video. Not the best layout but it works!

I'm glad you liked it. The Layout looks quite good to me. The iron ore mines on the mountain can be difficult. If I play the map again, I would place the mines somewhere else.

Thank you but the trains choice didn't really have anything to do with the map It was all a matter of choosing my favourite trains

to difficult to make new high speed record, long distance but only going arround the mountains only make an average speed of 11 mph?? and the monthly profit is low
