hi, im cybernetic. open ttd is quite the game. its runs very smoothly, and i love the pixel graphics. im just curious. how do people here play open ttd, do you use it like a virtual model railroad and sandbox building a giant model with no real goal and infinite money through cheats, or do you play it like a strategy game. what is your favorite way to play? any tips for a beginner on enjoying open ttd. also, are there like say, sci-fi mod versions of open ttd. i don't see any thing like spaceship grf's. and was wondering if open ttd has modding in the traditional form think, a open ttd version of starwars, with giant deathstars and imperial destroyers, or a scene from batman begins with the gotham cityscape and monorails. cheers :)

Welcome!

Different people play in different styles, and I am sure people play it in ways you described, and everything in-between.
The wiki (wiki.openttd.org) has a lot of information for beginners, although some of it is quite hidden.

As for mods, we do have mods but at a much smaller scale. The game impact varies. For some it is merely eye-candy, for others it is quite deep.
We call them NewGRFs, and they bring you new vehicles, industries, stations, and much more.

Oh, and we don't do war and destruction, we already have enough of that in other games and in real life.

Concerning "Sci-Fi mods", the only thing i know in that direction is the "Toyland to Mars conversion" Set, which revives a graphical feature from an earlier Version of Transport Tycoon.

There was a guy who invented a "OpenTTD 500 years in the future" concept, but afair nothing proper ever came of this.

Most modders (GRF authors) seem to focus on historical accuracy, so the general direction is further in the past, not further in the future.

that may be the best way to go. im a big history fan and it was by best subject. does open ttd have a good ai system? how do i find the hidden parts in the manual? seeing how this game is (what i heard to be) over 25 yo it would be a good idea to have a pdf maual, or even a book you could buy.

Please, don't bump your own posts, editing would be sufficient. Furthermore there is the Wikito get you started, I wouldn't know about a manual (either scanned or not) from the old days.
