It's icy in London.....

The highspeed ICE train arrives in London St Pancres testing how well it will run through the channel tunnel. Tests over the weekend have gone well and the German train operator Deutsche Bahn says it will run direct services from London to Frankfurt and Amsterdam from 2013.
Services will run from London to brussels before spliting, half the train going to Amsterdam and the other Frankfurt.
This is the first time eurostar will have direct competison for travel into europe. With testing on the ice train going well this could mean more companies looking to run fast services from london to other european cities.
May this mean that Jamies May and Richard Hammon could beat Clarkson in a car vs public transport race.

wouldn't bet on it - it's almost certainly rigged anyway
not that that fact stops me watching it religiously

This was today?
God damnit! I was in London today. Wish I had known about that train being there.

Tonight, the first ICE-3 will cross the tunnel and arrive at London St. Pancras (track 5).

Would the ICE's need British classification numbers if they are running on British rails?

There was talk of what it would be on TOPS when they are certified, currently unknown they there are gaps for them to retain their German unit numbers 406/407 even though that doesn't fit into the TOPS classification (3xx usually being AC overhead and 4xx being DC 3rd rail) not that there aren't others that break the system, the number class 70s for example.

I would have thought they'd just go to 375 after Eurostar being 373, forgetting of course we've already got some of them.
Maybe 393?

Why not a subclass of 320, afterall Velaro and Ice 3s are essentially the same

Well, you're assuming the Velaros are going to get the 320 number, it's all irrelevant anyway really!

You're forgetting we already have 320s, and mighty fine trains they are too...

I'd love to see one of those on an express to Frankfurt!

Why 375? Is there a reason they wouldn't be 374? (I'm not aware of a "Class 374", but at the same time, I'm not aware of any restrictions there may be in the system, so I'm just curious.)

Dunno if the service ICE sets will need yellow ends. Still think trains look weird without them.

Note the gaps between 150 and 153, the difference between a Sprinter and SuperSprinter. 66, 67 and 70, despite being from the same manufacturers.
It's not that it wouldn't go to the next one in the sequence, but the units being so different from the 373 would probably miss the 374 tag. Besides the 373 was so numbered when they were the highest AC unit number on the network - 375, 376, 377, 378 and 380, as well as the 390, have since gone higher. I'd say the ICE would actually be 399 as it's a non-standard UK unit, where none have been built for use north of LOndon, unlike the 373.

Fair enough; as I say, I'm not too familiar with the logic behind numbering past the basic prefixes/groupings!
