There is only one word to describe it, though the Keanu Reeves' agent would probably sue me if I used it. (4 letters, beginning with W)
Joke patch switch suggestion: In addition to largestations, we have fsckinghugestations

nice isn't it ?

What a mass of track to go with it. If we keep going like that, there'll be no way of having less track than "everything else"

Wait till they become 12x12...
Stations the size of towns...

exactly
But its a gigant shot, it's always like this...

No, they are just modern-art streetlight pylons on the bridge.
About the big station - it's only 6 long! I'd rather stick with longer stations than wider ones.
It really causes a problem with the switching and interchanges I bet. Is there some way of improving it maybe? I mean, by having a special "interchange" block that allowed several trains in the block at one time, as long as they all had a known place to go and their paths across the switches didn't intersect? It would be another function of presignals I suppose.

It's even five long.

Yep, it's only five, because my trains aren't so long
In general there could be a way to allow 15(14)x15(14) Stations.
But all stuff above 7x7 Stations breaks a lot of TTD internals, and to change it would make savegames complete incompatible to the current savegame format... (and you couldn't use the old ones in the new version)
If I get some time I have to look in each and every function If there is a different way.

Ohh and currently It breaks a lot stuff, like removing stations ...

I think that, while bigger stations might be nice, they should wait until after
a.) the catchment areas are larger, and
b.) the internal station queueing between trains is working.
Otherwise the entire map will be nothing but tracks and stations.

Bigger stations should wait until bigger maps. Which aren't possible, my point exactly.

You kind of have a point. Here's another question though:
What happens when you have a large station that overlap a town line? For instance, your big station above is in one city, but it's pretty close to another city. I would assume that it picks up cargo from both. What about delivered cargo? Is it credited to both cities? Pro-rated between them, or split? How is that handled?

Just a vote (IMHO). I think, 7x7 stations are enough

Currently I can't say it exactly...
The waiting cargo will be from things around, the upload cargo will be counted to the owner town. It's how ttd handles stuff, we have a similar problem with more industries already....
I added a vote to this topic, free feel to post thoughts and opinions.
Ohh, and the first 7 platform x 14 length station was erasable

Hmm, that's interesting. I have a specific question though, maybe you can answer it for me with your game you took a screenshot of.
This big station is technically "owned" by Schweinfurt, that's why it's named Schweinfurt Transfer. (Unless you changed the name for some reason.) But you can see, most of it actually is in Obergen.
Now, Schweinfurt Transfer probably accepts Passengers and Mail, since it comes close to Obergen and I think there are enough houses and things down by that corner to qualify. But there are NO houses of Schweinfurt that are in the catchment area. So, if you delivered passengers and goods, would they be credited to Schweinfurt, even though you aren't in range? Or to Obergen?
And here's another one. Supposing that Obergen grew just a bit so Schweinfurt Transfer accepted goods, as well as generating them. And suppose you started delivering goods there from somewhere else. Would Schweinfurt get the credit for goods delivered, even though the city as a whole isn't even big enough to accept the goods, even if it was in the catchment area of the station, which it isn't?
Does any of this matter? I guess it depends on the scoring system. Maybe it would cause Schweinfurt to grow more than it really ought to, which wouldn't really hurt anything.

I can surely say at code level only the owner town of the station gets the cargo you trains unload...
With the really small stations it wasn't a big problem,
with 7x7 you already have that problem... anyway
--- edit: new stuff ---
But it was a good question, I have think about the problem with industries, maybe that could be fixed

I don't play too much lately but that would definately change if you could implement extralargestations or your action at a near stable version

The bigger the better.
Not that I would use that for every station.
But here or there a big one wouldn't hurt.
