Highlight various track types with various colours

Post by Kreny »

Hi All,

at first, I would like to thank You for a great work. OpenTTD is masterpiece
at second, I really searched if my suggestion is not suggested already (or even implemented  ) so in a case I failed, plese don't hurt me :)

and now finaly to my suggegstion : Is it possible to highlight various tracks with various colours when some key is pressed (e.g. normal track with RED colour, electrified with GREEN etc.)

Reason for this suggegstion : when someone is updating tracks via Convert Rail feature, it is sometimes hard to update track properly (and everyone knows what is the behaviour of electric train on non-electrified track:) ).

So is this possible to include into game and worth of it at first place?

Thanks,

Br, Kreny

This suggestion has been lingering around since the introduction of elrails.

there was a (imho) very promising tile highlighting patch in development a while back, but unfortunately the coder disappeared before finishing it, so unfortunately it never hit trunk and should be very outdated by now.

Unfortunately I am not coder but because there is already some highlighting implemented (reserved tracks) then it shoudn't be so hard to use it for those purposes I guess. I suppose that for example normal track has ID 0, electrified track has ID 1, monorail has ID 2 etc.... so is it possible to highlught every "0" track with red, every "1" with green etc. in the same way as it is highlighted for reserved track ?

Highlighting tracks would probably be fine, although highlighting a track in a specific colour would be harder due to the way the 8bpp graphics are recoloured. It would definately be possible to darken (like a reserved path) one track type at a time though...

I remember recently reading a suggestion for giving different colors to different kinds of track in the smallmap, maybe that would help? (On the bottom of this page)

Thanks for the link. But I think that minimap is not detailed at first place. You can't recognize that one piece of track is not "electrified properly" after You electrified some track. As Zephyris explained, it could be difficult to highlight in different colours and it would be enough to darken just one rail type as he (or she :?: ) proposed :)

So updated question : is it worth of effort to implement feature which will highlight/darken rail type which is currently selected from building tools ? From my (lame end-user) point of view, it would be nice to have it in the game.
