openttd server costs?

Hi guys...
I was going to play OPENTTD when I thought: "Why don't make a Server?"
The questions are:
How can you make a server?
Does it cost making a server?
Don't you get money if some people connect on my server? :D

Multiplayer -> Start Server (Make sure you have your ports forwarded)
joshua peli wrote:Does it cost making a server?
If you don't count electricity and bandwidth, then no.

Also, starting OpenTTD with -D will start a dedicated server.

That's what a server is, isn't it? Running non-stop...

It doesn't, but it obviously will be accessible only when it is running.

I've edited your first post to remove the caps from the topic title. Using all caps is considered shouting, which is not very polite. Please don't use all caps next time.

1) You can make a server with any old hardware you have lying around. I have a Pentium 4 @ 2.53 Ghz with 1 GB of RAM as my server machine, and it can comfortably handle 4 servers without issues. I sometimes (often) run a 5th server on my main desktop box as well. All you really need is a PC, connected to the internet, and the ability to forward one TCP port per server to that box.

2) It costs electricity to run the server. And bandwidth. I really haven't calculated how much it costs, but I have 2 computers running 24/7 anyways, and with the fridge, lights, and everything else in this house that uses electricity I am about $75-100 a month down on electricity. I guess the 2 PC's probably cost me $10 in electricity, give or take.

3) NO you don't make any money, who would want to pay to connect to your server anyways?

Actually, I have Internet connection problems (I use a stupid wireless system)...that means that I can't make a server because it will close every 10 minutes, doesn't it??? ;(

Servers and WiFi is generally not the best of ideas, even for a stable connection.

Well you can have a port with a lot of money. You can forward the required ports through your router settings using virtual servers

what more can we do than to point you to your routers manual with regards to "port forwarding" and/or "virtual servers"?
then perhaps some certain parts of the openttd wiki might make more sense ;-)

The website http://portforward.com/ has very easy to follow guides for most brands of routers on how to enable port forwarding. You may also want to look at http://dyndns.com/ for making it easier to connect to a home PC where the IP address may change.

You should be able to host a server even with a WiFi connection as long as it is good and reliable, but if it is not a reliable connection (and free/open/public access points rarely are), then it will not be very good at all.

thx...maybe you're right, but it's just a "test" I do...maybe someone with a better connection (with wires) wants to be an admin...;)
