I have been having problems with the autorenew vehicles function - when switched on my trains (and possibly other vehicles) do not autorenew

a report "it does not work" does not give any starting point to find out where the problem may be.
Give more details (what are you trying, what do you think should happen and why, or why is what happens wrong?), and/or supply a save game that demonstrates the problem.

Sorry - when I switch on the auto-renew function, at the end of the trains lives, they are simply not being auto-renewed. I do not understand why and I am still having to do it manually.

Please provide:

1) A screenshot of your autorenew set up and a train not auto-renewing in a depot

and/or

2) A save game where autorenew is not functioning.

Also: are you getting any messages regarding auto-renew, such as "insufficent money"

Still not enough details.
Some questions that may point to the cause:

Did you setup a replacement? (and clicked 'replace vehicle' or so?)
Enough money? http://wiki.openttd.org/Autorenew_money
Old enough? http://wiki.openttd.org/Autorenew_months
Does the replacement exist?

Plz provide an example (an actual case) with a save game, so we can have a look?
