Nice disposition of the signals at the 2 huge railway station at SW. You gave me some ideas to use PBS ...

Could you please explain me, why you build your mainlines in LLRR_____LLRR and not i.e. LLLL____RRRR (or less)?

Re: [OTTD] savegame - giant network 2x4 way 600+ trains
because there are two independent mainlines ..Could you please explain me, why you build your mainlines in LLRR_____LLRR and not i.e. LLLL____RRRR (or less)?
i tried building one mainline with LLLL_RRRR but it is too complicated to build when you want too handle massive traffic. So i splited everything in two mainlines which are easier to access but handle the same amount of traffic like one 8 way mainline.
Maybe ill try the 8 way mainline again in the future, i have some good ideas which use a lot of short bridges. But it will take a lot of space.
This savegame also needs much improvment. Im not happy with some junctions in the SW area. Some bridges are too long and there is a path missing in the middle. Ill try to fix that now and upload a better version.
Re: [OTTD] savegame - giant network 2x4 way 600+ trains
I attached a savegame where you possibly get some hints to build a 4-4-mainline or how to reduce it to a 3-3-mainline. (Keyword: Shift Main Line http://www.openttdcoop.org/wiki/SML)
The screenshot has a size of 43MB, so I skipped it

Re: [OTTD] savegame - giant network 2x4 way 600+ trains
looks nice
but your mainline just ends in the factory station .. i want to build mainlines where trains are able to go in any direction so the construction of huge networks is easy.

This is the West entrance to my sawmill in the south. The entrance just splits of from the mainline so trains can go past the sawmill.

Re: [OTTD] savegame - giant network 2x4 way 600+ trains
I got your point, but I know no case were you need 4 lanes to merge with a 4 lane mainline. Usually you build exits on all lanes of the mainline and entrance only on the inner lane (or inner two).
Some days ago I refactored an old map(from my beginnings). There I could reduce an old 6-6 line to a 2-2 line. What I want to say is, that in most cases you don't need more lane, but just a better distribution. If you leave some space between every lane you can make your life even easier.
I couldn't resist to quickly rebuild your northern station. There is a lot of work left, only as a draft. I realisted to late that your western station handles 4 times more trains.
P.S
Mixing of PBS an normal signals is a problem if you cause jams. Where no PBS is necessary you should use a normal.
P.P.S
Use one station for drop and an other for pick up.

I just looked at the savegame. Honestly, you could easily scrap half of the tracks. Then you might have the network capacity which is needed for that amount of trains; the tracks are anything but full.

Re: [OTTD] savegame - giant network 2x4 way 600+ trains
There are some spots where i want to connect two mainlines. Like the junctions in the middle of the map .. I find it very hard to build something like that with 8 ways. You need much space to connect everything.I got your point, but I know no case were you need 4 lanes to merge with a 4 lane mainline. Usually you build exits on all lanes of the mainline and entrance only on the inner lane (or inner two).
I like 2x4 ways better because it is easier to optimize. One small change on an 8 way junctions costs to much effort.
I was experimenting with signals a bit to see how trains behave. Usually i use normal signal except when lines cross eachother.Mixing of PBS an normal signals is a problem if you cause jams. Where no PBS is necessary you should use a normal.
Why, the stations are seperated anyway?Use one station for drop and an other for pick up.
The savegame is far away from being final .. the only region with heavy loads is the SW area. I think i can get the network up to 1500+ trains with no major jams. Before that i need to improve some junctions.I just looked at the savegame. Honestly, you could easily scrap half of the tracks. Then you might have the network capacity which is needed for that amount of trains; the tracks are anything but full.

While rebuilding your stations/junctions you will usually cause jams and delayed trains. So situation can occur where every plattform is filled by a loading train and no dropping train can arrive -> deadlock.

I only build in pause modus and i use only one mainline for goods and the other for the rest..While rebuilding your stations/junctions you will usually cause jams and delayed trains.
