Hello!

I don't know where the standard city names list come from, I'd like to add more languages on it but I don't know (except via GRF) how.

Are the LNG files the ones that make that? How can I add more without using GRF slots?

yes, if you show the developers a sane setup with that many loaded GRFs.

Since there are many GRFs that only adds a single improvement, city names or single vehicles....believe it or not, I need more slots!

You haven't shown us anything so far. As for city names, you only need 1 newgrf per game for city names, so it's not like a big issue.

seriously... you need to cut back on that list... you don't need 3 road sets... and 5 tram sets... and 20 single airplanes...

you don't need more grfs, you need to cut back to the grfs that you actually use. and that is exactly the purpose of the grf limit

Need? You don't need any grfs, but thats not much fun. You asked for a sane setup and you got one. 3 road sets? Those 3 complement each other extremely well IMO. I don't use trams much, but I often found the selections in a given set somewhat limiting, so if thats your thing, I see no issue with multiple sets. Ok, maybe you don't need all 11 single plane grfs, but there are also many commonly used grfs that aren't in that list (multiple train sets, signals, depots, bridges, most of OpenGFX, industrial stations etc).

Whether its the sort of example that would encourage the devs to increase the limit, I have no idea.

the separators are the most obvious choice to leave out...
and egrvts, 4lv, germanlv, cstrams and hirotrams... there is not much "sanity" in that mix...
combroads and road-cs?
some obsolete station sets, not sure if you really need them all...

and you should probably use the OpenGFX base graphics set, not the (testing) NewGRF versions.

i think this list is exactly the reason why the limit should not be increased. people should put more thought into what they REALLY need, not just what they want.

Not particularly, but neither do I have an issue with using (for example) eGrvts, 4LV and Heqs together. Infact, i think they complement extremely well. Same deal with multiple train or tram sets. Just because they originate in different parts of the world doesn't mean they can't be used together.

But arguing over which grfs work together isn't really the point. I can quite easily reach 40+ constructive grfs for a game, without including any of the smaller type grfs listed here (individual vehicles, buildings, colors etc), so reaching 60 wouldn't be hard. I see no need to extend it beyond that however. At some point you'll just have to compromise.

First of all, thx sc79 you've expressed my point of view at 100%.

Secondly, I don't need all of the GRFs but it gives more variety to the game, and yes I like to have 10-15 different stations depending of each type, and if I could I'd add all I could find. Is that bad? The separators are really good to split the GRFs, that's something that cannot be discussed.

Of course I know that including separators and single GRFs for a single plane is not "efficient" in terms of slot consuming but hey, I've not found any big patch that includes all of these GRFs together, and believe me I've made extensive seachings!

Anyway, I don't want that it becomes a "ok you need to remove GRFs" because I've spent a lot of time making a nice set, and it works fine without any conflict.

My question was to be able to add city names to the game, if it's not possible due the limitations on the GRF amount...I'm noone to discuss it, you're the master of the great OTTD, I'm just wondering if it's possible to increase the limit of GRFs or to put another way to add city names, whatever is easier...

It is indeed not a big issue to use all NewGRFs slots. But I see it as part of the game for scenario creator, you have to think about, what you can/should include to your "backpack", like in roleplay games or shooters.

Most games are fine with 30 NewGRFs, where you use always all available station sets, around 15, then 2-3 per type (landscape, infrstructure, buildings, industries) and 1-3 per vehicle type (around 10 more) ~ 40 -> still 25 more to use.

Edit: Hmm, your list has still space for at least one town names set...

Yep 1 or zero! I've the error of too many GRFs loaded actually.

Anyway, I apprecite your suggestion but I don't know (if it's not because there's a technical problem with that) why there's a limit on the amount. Sometimes we'd like to test many different GRFs all together...and I've not added all the city-related GRFs I'd like!

Just for my understanding, the current limit is 60 now right?

If I recall correctly, it's related to the network management.
But since I've not ventured much in this area of the code, cannot tell the exact reason, just that vague one.
