OpenTTD has unstable multiplayer

My friend seems to have a problem when it comes to OpenTTD's internet play.
It worked fine the first few times, and it didn't have any problems - we were able to play fine for ten years each time...and now, he joins, and it usually fails within 10 seconds to 5 minutes. It's very inconvenient to have him constantly rejoin over and over just so we can play another 5 minutes...it's also this way with online public servers as well. Other games have no problems when it comes to net play, and he's running on a very stable wireless connection.
How can we make it so OpenTTD's net play is more stable, like it was the first few times we played?
